You are correct. I do think the fact that what numbers WRs could wear was limited impacted that decision. You really couldn't afford to retire numbers. Can't remember when they opened the teens to receivers. It think they had the 20s and 80s to work with before then, and the 20s were shared with DBs and RBs and 80s with TEs.Schramm/Landry started the 88 tradition. They originally gave 1986 #1 Mike Sherrard 88 but he didn't want the pressure and switched to 86. They then drafted Irvin #1 in 1988 and gave him the number. So Jerry just kept the tradition that was already started.
