I think they told Gardner first out of respect. They will try to keep him on the PS if think he has any upside potential. He seems to have physical limitations, so they may be ready to let him go all together.

I can see the Gardner cut...

He didn't have the burst nor the arm length for a 4-3 DE. I know there was experimentation as far as moving him inside but almost every DL except Gregory, Lawrence and Edwards is capable of playing a DT on a passing down... plus the two kids, Coleman & Bishop had strong camps as pure DT's...

It seems Efe has a higher ceiling due to being much more superior athlete. Gardner is a smart guy, whose best trait is motor.

I doubt they think much of him if they cut him even if he is a year away. I think Cowboy fans think more highly of Gardner than the Cowboys do.
