The Dallas Cowboys figure to have an interesting off season with how they approach their defensive line. Defensive tackle Terrell McClain is entering free agency, and the Cowboys want to bring him back. However, they plan to let McClain test the market and see what offers he gets before bidding on his contact. The Cowboys like McClain's steady and hard-working presence in their defensive line room. With some problem children already in there, they like McClain's grounded approach. Sources say to keep an eye on the Seahawks as a suitor that could target McClain. The Seahawks would like an interior disruptor.

Dallas is also faced with breakout defensive end David Irving as an exclusive rights free agent. The Cowboys would like to sign him to a cheap multi-year contract, but sources say that Irving will reject that and play under the 1-year tag to work his way to unrestricted free agency with the hopes of securing a lucrative market-value contract extension.

With the suspension issues of Randy Gregory and Demarcus Lawrence, the Cowboys also could target a defensive end late in the first round. Irving will return to Dallas, but bringing back McClain would help give them more flexibility in the draft.

It would be a hit to lose McClain. He's not a difference-maker, but he's a reliable player in that rotation if he can just stay healthy.

Not exactly news that Irving will play out his ERFA deal. He'd be dumb not to unless they want to take a chance and overpay him.

Besides Irving and Collins. The rest of the DL is replaceable or in need of a upgrade. Can't doit all at once but the guys we wheel out there consistently are Jags, or Suspensions waiting to happen.

Crazy how McClain faded after the great start to the year.

Considering his history, wonder if there was some type of injury...

I think Irving is better than Crawford now. Would hate it if the decision to sign him affect the negotiations with Irving.

I agree with your premise but I don't think we should be "negotiating" with Irving. Wave a few million in front of him and see if he bites, if not let him play on the tag.

I love the player but he disappears at times. Between the Packers game and the Bucs game, he was MIA. If he works hard this offseason and develops consistency then he can be the future face of our defense.

It's best for both parties to wait a year to work out a long term deal.

He's definitely more dynamic. Crawford had more tackles, assists, hurries, and sacks. Crawford did have more snaps (694) than Irving (543). And Crawford he was also reportedly playing injured from week 2 on, too.

Interestingly, guess who led all DLs in snap count in 2016? M. Collins, with 715. Pretty impressive.

Irving needs consistency though. I have no problem giving him a cheap one year 'prove it' contact and paying him at a premium if his play demands it.

What's it going to be then, eh?

Posted this in another thread earlier today.

If this is indeed the approach, I have zero issues with it.

We have to get out of paying for flashes. We did it for Crawford already.

I think there is a 0% chance McClain stays healthy next year, seemed like a contract year thing. I actually hope we don't resign him.

I second that!

People want to say that overpaying Crawford is 'no biggie' and that the Cowboys 'can do whatever they want in free agency', and meanwhile we'll watch Ron Leary walk out the door...
Ron Leary would walk out the door if we offered him more than another team. He feels slighted and wants out. Ron Leary is not a good example for the point you're trying to make.
