Shed the salaries of Melton, Carr, and Church(trade for draft pick) and add a good CB, a true FS, and a proven pass rushing DE. Then draft a DE, DT, and LB in the first 4 rounds.

would you let Dez walk for Suh and JPP?

.....Suh made 22 million this year, he is looking for top money which would be 15+ a year likely and JPP is going to get 10+ easily. So how exactly could we get both for the price of Dez?

Some guys who may help in 2015:

Sean Lee LB
Justin Durant LB

Ben Gardner DE

Mo Claiborne CB

I'm done with Selvie and Spencer at SDE. Should be a high draft priority. There were a bunch with high grades this past draft.

Or, unfortunately, some guys who will be injured yet again in 2015.

I expect Henry Melton to be let go, there's no reason to pick up his three year option given the way Tyrone Crawford has played at UT.

Melton's 2015 base salary of $9M can be put to better use on other players and it would represent a three year cash savings of $24M.

Brandon Carr also looks like a goner, the last three years of his deal call for him to make a total of $27.1M.

That's not happening.

Barry Church, on the other hand, is locked up in a cheap contract through 2016.

There's no reason to get rid of him, even if a true center field FS is added with Church and J.J. Wilcox competing at SS.

Don't look right now, but both sides (defensive ends), were losing run containment throughout this game. This against a good rushing team.

Part of that is this defensive scheme. It often calls for DE to crash down inside. The LBs are responsible for outside contain when the DEs crash down inside. There have been several occasions this season that the LB and DE both went inside and all outside contain was lost.

I don't know if it's part of the play call or if the LB is required to "read" the DE, but either way the LB has to have outside contain when the DE is crashing down inside.

It's a tough thing for any highly paid player to take a massive pay cut and remain with his team.

It can be very awkward for them in the locker room and at any team function, their egos simply can't take it.

It's much easier to refuse the offer, get released and go to a new team for a greatly reduced salary.

This.

Another excellent post!

Yes, I can't see paying Melton when he is only playing slightly over 30 snaps per game and Crawford is the starter at the 3-tech. They would get more for their money by paying Suh for 60 snaps per game than paying Melton 9M for 30 snaps per game.

IMO, they have to find a decent free agent CB to replace Carr. Giving him a pay cut does not make him a better player.

They need depth at Safety. If they can find somebody to beat out Church, then they would have some depth. Plus nobody is going to trade for a guy that the Cowboys are replacing as a starter.

I'm not willing to pay guys that don't play qb upwards of 10 mil per year. It's just not smart.

It take it that means "too much" ???

yes sir (imho, I'd love to have him but I don't see how they could justify the cap hit, they need a deeper roster to quit the end of the year fade that is starting to peek its head out again this year)

Would you agree that 12M for Suh who generally plays over 60 snaps per game is better than 9M for Melton who generally plays just over 30 snaps per game?

That was his cap hit. He "made" 12.5M this year.

His salary was: 12.55 Million
He got 3.470.000 Option bonus
125,000 work out bonus
and 6,267,000 in signing bonus to equal 22,412,000 this year.

You don't just take his salary, the SB is counted in how much you cost as well.

I've never understood why that site loves Anthony Spencer so much.

Going by their stats, Spencer has four games this year wear he had just 1 tackle.

He graded above average, higher than +1.0, in two of them.

Spencer was given a +2.1 pass rush grade for the Jacksonville game while generating only 1 QB hurry in 17 pass rush snaps.

They graded him +0.8 in run defense for the Philly game. He had 2 TFLs, but he lost contain on multiple occasions and those were the only tackles he made in the game.

That's very generous.
