I know it was near heresy when I said in back in 2014, but Durant was playing near Sean Lee's level there before he got hurt. I thought it was a bigger loss than Murray when he went to ATL.
McClain was a different player, but he was capable of playing on a different level than Durant when he wanted too. He didn't want to often enough. Overall, the one year they played together I thought they were similarly productive complementary players. I have no idea whether Durant is still playing that well after ATL cut him, but I assume he was not or he wouldn't have been available.
Either way, you have to be careful not to get caught up in the hype or the coverage when it comes to players. Much of the time it's just there because it makes a good story.
