Cowboys draft needs?

I see your point, but if we draft tight end in the 2nd, you're essentially wasting Jarwin and Schultz before they have a chance to show what they can do.
Schultz as a rookie got few reps since he was behind Swaim as the vet and Jarwin as his backup. Essentially you're giving up on what could be a Pro Bowl tight end. Just too early to tell, imo. I do agree that at this point tight end isn't a strong part of the team at this time, but with the emphasis on the running game tight end on this team is really just another blocker, we could have Kelce or Ertz and he'd not be a Pro Bowler since he'd get used way less than they are with other teams...
What do we spend the pick on then? Your logic of not giving up on players before they have a chance to show what they can do can go for any position. Can’t draft a DT early cause Woods might be a pro bowl 1tech or can’t draft a corner because Lewis might be a pro bowl corner and just needs the reps. I see what you mean about giving them a chance to show what they can do but at this point TE is clearly the weakest position on the offense. Also Tight End is very deep in this year draft class. Good chance a clear upgrade slides to us compared to other positions. I would like an upgrade at RT but I get the feeling Jerry doesn’t have it in him to move on from Collins.

Agree. Whoever they get must be a serviceable blocker, since Dak and the offense are best when the designs flow through Zeke and the ground game.

Being they don’t have a first round pick, and while this whole exercise is fairly absurd, it’s even more absurd to try to peg who will be going in the mid 50s come April. Iowa’s Noah Fant is probably a fringe first rounder at the moment. Or maybe Alabama’s Irv Smith Jr., son of the former Saints first round TE.
Yes. Jarwin and Shultz have shown to be decent pass catching options this year but they are not the best of blockers. We need someone who can give Zeke that extra time to make his move and get the big gain. Also with Beasley most likely moving on in free agency looking for his pay day, Dak gonna need a new safety blanket to move the chains on short passes.

I'd have to go with LT, that's very critical position for a right handed quarterback, especially one that holds the ball so long so many times. Now Dak can work on that, but Zeke's best runs are to the outside, a LT will help there also. And a top LT can probably go to the right side as well, there have been plenty of LTs in college, like Collins, that are said to be better suited to move to RT in the NFL. That would give the Cowboys some assurance at the RT spot should Collins go down or have to move to guard, should Conner not improve at guard.

Anyway that's what I'd do, which probably means Jerry will draft another linebacker

Watching every game and seeing where we could go isn't really difficult. First, we have to know if Frederick is coming back because he is the key to the O line. If so, then center would only be a second round pick if by far the BPA. Tyron Smith is a great OT but injuries have hurt him the last several years so to cover our bets I would rank OT as the primary area of need unless we resign Fleming for a couple of years. Still having a guy to groom to eventually start for Smith isn't a bad idea.

The next area for me would be DT as Collins and Woods are great together but not really the difference maker that Irving is when he is playing and with the draft being deep at DT, it is a spot to maybe find the next David Irving without the personal problems.

The third spot is, for me, a FS that can be a difference maker. I like Xavier Woods and maybe he is the guy but drafting a S should be a priority in the middle rounds.

Fourth are for me might be WR. I know it seems unlikely due to Cooper, Gallup, Brown, maybe Beasley back, and Wilson coming off the IR but would like a young guy similar to Austin without the constant injuries situation.

I really think trader Jerry will work some magic and we end up with a second, 2 or 3 thirds (comp? maybe), 2 fourths, a fifth and seventh. So if the board falls right then wouldn't mind a draft looking something like this (my early, early, early mock) assuming Frederick is going to be back.

2. David Edwards OT Wisconsin - would be excellent backup to groom behind Smith
3. Taylor Rapp FS Washington - vastly underrated, great size, fits Richard mold for a FS
3. Michael Jackson, Jr. CB Miami - good size and range
3. Dexter Lawrence DT Clemson - great 1 tech, suspension going to cost him a round or two or three
4. Seebo Samuel WR South Carolina - great speed, needs work on routes but a burner with good hands
4. Renell Wren DT Arizona State - great size, quick 1st move
5. Bryce Love RB Stanford - a lot like McCaffery and great change of pace (if Darius Jackson shows well against Giants Sunday then I would change this)
7. Kyle Kempt QB Iowa - I am a person would like to see us draft a QB every year.

Free agency:
Landon Collins SS

Sure this will all change monthly until March.

Nooo way Jerry touches LT. that spot probably belongs to Smith till the day he decides to retire. A swing tackle would be a good get but they might just keep Fleming. Honestly I would like to keep Fleming & move to Starting RT, move Collins back to LG, and develope Conner Williams to be the swing. His agility and athleticism would be greater used out on the edges where as Collins mauling strength is needed to clear the way for Zeke in the middle. Also Gives Williams the time to develop the technique and strength he needs if he is needed to take over permanently at one the tackle positions.

I’m still in the TE camp but I will gladly take a DT too. Both are the deepest positions on the draft and good chance a really good TE or DT falls to us if not within reasonable trade up spot.

O line OT if one is good enough.
DT - yes someone for the middle
RB backup with some inside running ability.

The offensive line has been a disappointment so far, but Connor Williams will get stronger, and the issues have been more technical than physical. The Travis Fredrick situation could throw a wrench in all this. o_O

Think u forgot TE its probably our top NEED ..were gonna sign Earl at S

Unless there’s somebody like all world at TE, put me in the minority for another TE.. Don’t see it as a glaring need, we Need another offensive scheme.. Earl might need another year off before he regains his full abilities once again.

Whether the need is TE or OT or DT or whatever, who they get will likely depend on who's the BPA in the second round. For example If the need is TE but all the good ones are gone but there's a very highly rated DT, for instance, then you take the DT.

In the second round I doubt there will be any no. 1 prospect at any position left available...

Not after watching yesterdays game.

My concern with Jarwin coming out of college was his weight, his draft profile listed him at 246, that's light for an NFL tight end. I note the Cowboys website lists him at 260, either he put on weight or the team lists players differently.

In any case he was originally more of a big receiver than a big blocker, think yesterday shows at least the receiver part was right...

It’s a given to not reach just to fill a need but if any good player is to slip to us in the 2nd it would be a TE or a DT. Both very deep in this years draft which is great for us because upgrades at TE and DT is needed. Those pounding the table for a OT will be asking for us to reach though.

Well you never know, sometimes a couple of good players like TE go early so some teams panic and start grabbing one "before all the good ones are gone". Often there are "runs" on certain positions, and other positions have very good players fall into the second round.

We'll just have to wait and see what happens!

Of course. No draft is predictable. All you can do is look at past draft patterns to somewhat get an idea. Teams usually reach on premium positions like Pass rushers and OT every year while positions like DTs and TE get over looked. Although TE has become a much more valuable position of late. OG could become a possibility. Move Connor Williams to one the OT spots and trade away Collins. Start the rookie at LG.

Really thought we would be/need to make TE a priority in the draft or free agency. With the ability Jarwin’s been showing the past few games I can see a possibility that we may not address it all.

I don’t know Swaim’s contract status but he’s solid depth as-is Schultz. Jarwin seems to be that athletic TE we’ve been needing and Dak desperately needs.

We’re 31st in the red zone. Having Jarwin, Schultz and an excellent RZ target TE drafted in the 2nd wouldn’t be an issue. Swaim is a free agent.

I’d probably go OT in 3. Can we afford to pay our 4th or 5th best OL top money? LC is a free agent after 2019.

The trend for tight ends these days is an Ertz or Kelce - more receiver than blocker. Jarwin seems to fit the bill, I'd prefer they develop him and Schultz and draft another position in the second round..
