Cowboys draft needs?

The way the draft class is looking, even at pick 58 we should be able to add a WR or TE that can contribute right away.

Of course, anyone can slip and a lot will change but as of now, that range seems perfect for a quality WR or TE. The D Line is deep but it's top heavy, the really good ones will all be gone by pick 40.

After watching that game, DT, S, OL. Because until those are improved, the rest won't matter.

A 3rd WR on this team is not the way to go. Jarwin and Schultz are the top 2 TEs next year and think they’ve done a nice job.

SS, DT are needs to use in 2nd.

Backup RB/slot WR would be 4th round for me.

DT if this game was not obvious enough has to be a priority. I like Christian Wilkins from Clemson if he makes it to us.

Nasir Adderley safety from Delaware peeks my interest as well. Those I am posting are guys I feel we could get with our spots in the draft.

If we lose Beasley and Austin to free agency, likely cut Terrance Williams ($2.25M in cap savings and no more guaranteed $$$) and possibly cut Allen Hurns ($5M in cap savings, coming off serious injury), 3rd WR becomes a huge need for us.

Jarwin and Schultz are decent #2 and #3 TE's, we need a legit #1 there IMO.

Good luck with that, Garrett and Jerry think you can win with cast offs and late rounders there...
Sad but true...

David Irving was another teams cast off, and prior to this season was a dam good pick up, Antwun Woods was another cast off who did a good job at NT, I am not saying they should contiue in the same vein, but we have had a couple of steals over the years from teams PS. We can actually go into FA with not as big glaring needs as in previous seasons. Top of the list is a FS, I would also add either a vet TE or another WR, as its more than likley we have seen the last of TWILL, and there are ? over both Bease and Hurns returning for 2019 Bease will be an UFA and Hurns all though under contract was playing as a 4th WR rather than the #2 that he we was signed for. This should set us upnicely for the draft, in that we can sit and wait for the players to fall, and as always there will be a couple of players that will fall into our laps.

If it was me I would look to FA for my DT either Grady Jarret or Shelton Richardson then draft me safety high. We could also go after Landon Collins in Fa and Draft DL with our 2nd pick. IMO those our our top needs. I wouldnt offer D Law 17+mil a year and if he wants more I would just tag him. He starts off strong but fades down the stretch if he signs a better deal for around 15 mil with incentives sign him,
With a New OC I could see Beasly signing for a descent contract but no way in Heck am I giving Tavon 7 mil. If he wants to stay in Dallas for vet min then he can stay. They will bring in more WR and TE during the Off season Hurns might not have a choice because of his injury.
We have done good in drafting and continue the course we will take the BPA for Us.
The first thing is to fire Linehan and Kellen

And they helped the Cowboys win the SB?

Not saying they aren't "decent" pick ups, my point is that they're not to the level that Dallas needs. Sure they play pretty well, but it's not good enough...

As is usually the case, you have to strike a balance between picking up free agents and drafting players.

Most times if a player is released by another team in the prime of his career (age-wise) it's because they aren't good enough to be a starter, and also most times the guy ahead of them isn't a perennial Pro Bowler, so it's not like he's really good just a tick under the guy ahead of him. And only seldom is it a case of their current team just not able to pay others and them also, though that does happen occasionally. Hopefully you can find some of those guys.

So free agents are mostly to provide solid backups, like Looney.

But your starters and long-term solution players should be drafted as much as possible. Cooper looks like the real deal, if you think so then say he's your no. 1 receiver and push wide receiver down your draft list. There's your starter in free agency.

Now turn your attention to positions like OT and S in the draft, gonna be sorta tough to do since the Cowboys don't have a first round pick, barring a trade with players/draft picks, and if you use lower draft picks you're limiting how many players you can get.

Sure wouldn't want Stephen's job, there's no clear cut or easy answer as to how to go from here. Regardless of what he does he'll get criticism anyway...

No they played pretty good, and to say otherwise is foolish and they are at the level we need, Woods was one of the better NT this season, having a quality rookie rotate with him will make the DL better.

Woods was one of the better NT this season,

Really? 1.5 sacks 34 total tackles. Aaron Donald had 20.5 sacks and 59 tackles. Some other DTs of note:
Deforest Buckner - 67 and 12
Fletcher Cox - 47 and 10.5
Jarren Reed - 50 and 10.5
Geno Atkins - 45 and 10.

There are many more.
Don't expect to have a Donald, but Woods is not as good as the Cowboys need.

What do you guys see the draft needs going into the 2019 draft after week 16? Who will we be losing in free agency?

I say go BPA all the way. Let it sort itself out.

In no particular order:

OT help
DT
Slot receiver
Backup RB
Third linebacker--- Wilson/Lee gone
Corner depth
Backup QB?

Let's hear your thoughts?

This list is subject to change depending on who we lose and who we gain via FA.

OL depth
LB depth
DB depth both Safety and CB
DT 1tech specifically
WR depth
RB depth

Don't see much way the Cowboys can address 5-6 need areas, with any real chance of getting a good player. No first round pick, signing Lawrence will suck up a lot of cap space, and there's also Beasley, Austin, Fleming (there's your o-line depth, if you want him), R. Smith, Swaim, Ross & D. Jones. Some of those guys will have to be re-signed, this team has a good core, releasing tons of players who know the system and re-building those spots is not a good idea.

I feel the Cowboys can address really two spots in the draft with reasonable expectations of getting a quality rookie, and maybe a really good free agent in one other spot. After that, it's a crap shoot as to getting guys who are better than you have now, and I'd not risk it...

After watching that game, DT, S, OL. Because until those are improved, the rest won't matter.

Over the course of the year the Cowboys defense was good most of the time. I don't see that this last game was mostly a lack of players, but more coaching. Holding the Saints to 10 pts and the Seahawks to 73 yards rushing wouldn't happen if the players were mostly at fault. Have to remember guys like Woods and J. Smith are very inexperienced, and Williams and Vanderesch are rookies (no, VE is not a DT or S, but his play affects those guys as well).

So this game shouldn't be used as a "we have to address those positions" because it was a problem at the Rams. Just saying you need to evaluate the needs based on the whole year...

Gallup is a rookie, I think he's shown enough promise that WR can be bumped down in the list. Jarwin caught 3 tds in a game, something Witten and Novacek never did. One game doesn't a solid TE make, but Schultz is a rookie and Swaim will probably be back. Too early to say they're not going to be good enough.

This is a deep and talented TE class. It's likely that a really good player will be there at 58, or within a reasonable trade up range.

It's also a deep DT class. The make up of the draft feels favorable for what we need.

Jarwin caught 3 tds in a game,

This is the problem with Cowboy fans and unfortunately the Cowboys organization. Prisoners of the moment. You can't let one game, especially one against a very bad Giants defense with nothing to play for, overrule a years worth of below average play.

Jarwin may be a good player who will continue to develop. You can't book it as a 100% certainty. Upgrade. Especially since we like to use 12 and 13 personnel so much.
