Hard to blame the team too much for making a bold move to go get the top-rated player at a premium position or a major position of need in a draft.Yeah Mo never lived up to that draft stock but it would've been a decent miss if they didn't give up so much for him. Instead, they not only missed out on some guys they passed up but gave up a pick to do it.
Would've been nice if he turned out to be worth it. I mean, in the past, we've settled for bad versions of a great player who got picked a handful of picks ahead of us, and we might have changed the course of our franchise if we'd been bold and gone and got the better guy.
In 1997, Tony Gonzalez got picked 13th overall while we picked David LaFleur 22nd.
In 1999, Jevon Kearse went 16th while we picked Ebenezer Ekuban 20th.
If we'd traded up to snag one of those great guys (the 97 trade would've cost a lot, but the 1999 one wouldn't have cost too much at all), we wouldn't look back and complain about the draft pick we gave up in the trade to acquire them. If Claiborne had been what he was supposed to be, same deal. We just had the bad luck of being bold when it came to the wrong guy. It happens.
And at least Claiborne was still a usable piece, unlike the worst busts. A bust who doesn't belong on the field at all is so much worse. Claiborne didn't become the elite shutdown type we hoped for but he belonged in an NFL starting lineup for a bunch of years. He just would've been better value if he fell towards the bottom of the round instead of someone picking him near the top, is all.
