Cowboys Free Agency Philosophy

I'm on the fence when it comes to how the Cowboys have acted in Free Agency the last few years. Part of me would say that their fear of signing players to bad contracts has prevented them from bringing in truly catalytic players, and they aren't drafting well enough. developing players well enough, or getting young players opportunities enough, to put together a super bowl quality team.

They may think that they were truly close in 2014 when we went 12-4, but those teams really struggled to keep the running game going in the playoffs and we still don't have a pass rush.

I don't think you can just sign your own players in free agency. I don't think you necessarily save money by doing so, rather you're just limiting your pool of players. The only benefit I see to that is you don't swing and miss as much. You know how a player fits in your system, and as long as they're staying in your system and scheme, they should get better in general as long as they are healthy.

Brandon Carr is the last really bad free agent contract we have on the books right now, though I could argue than unless Crawford turns things around that he was a bad contract, and Dez could easily have been a bad contract as well.

Next year, we only have to worry about re-signing Travis Frederick.

They've signed McClain who I think was integral.

The may sign Matt Moore who I think is a more than capable backup for Tony Romo.

I think if we sign Hardy to a 1 year deal with stipulations and incentives, and get a replacement for Hayden, we may be going into the draft strong.

I know we're torn on this, but at that point I still say go get Ezekiel Elliott in the first, and then focus on the rest of the defense with the rest of the picks. Still have to do something to replace Carr and Claiborne. I would be happy with that team.

Dallas Cowboys sold the most tickets in the NFL.Jerry doesn't care that we are 4-8.No sense paying that big money we are all good.I'm sorry as long as you guys keep drinking the cool aid.I am so sick of all the talk about cap hell. Why not give it a shot I mean 20 years of mediocrity and our only chance is Romo the man with bad back and a "fixed" collarbone.LOL here . And no coaching change either again no need to react hastily all is well.I get it , I hope the season ticket holders get it.Its a business winning is not the goal.

If the Cowboys didn't want to spend 6.5 million on Miller, a 24 yo proven back with little mileage, they'd better not draft Elliot in the first. Now that would make no sense at all.

The building an all star team through Free Agency thing has not worked out well for most teams. So many examples of failure lately. I'd rather see the Cowboys save their money for the OL studs. Draft a future QB and go in deep on defense the rest of the draft. This draft is loaded on Defense for the most part. Maybe sign a couple FA's to reasonable contracts to help out. RB and another veteran corner. There are still some available that will not command Jenkins type money.

It is one thing to sit back and let the market come to you when you are 12-4. It is entirely a whole other thing when you are 4-12 and let all the talent upgrades sign elsewhere. The Giants got a lot better today.

We haven't been a big player in FA because we have been on the lower echelon of cap management over the last few years. When you in the bottom 1/3 of cap space year after year, you don't make big FA acquisitions. Why is it we don't have a talented enough team to make the playoffs, yet our lesser talent is putting us in the bottom 1/3 of cap space? Hmmm.

The following players are overpaid
Brandon Carr
Dez Bryant
Tyrone Crawford
Jason Witten
Orlando Scandrick
Doug Free
Barry Church *seriously needs to get released

Actually stunned Church has been released already.

Actually they should be much more active in FA to fill in the holes left from drafting the same positions high in the previous drafts.

And with the surplus of cap this year...those great deals later are going to be fewer and farther between!

Cowboys are doing it right if Romo truly has 4 or 5 years left. Cowboys believe that their youth and young players getting better year to year is what will improve this team. That was a big part in our 2013 season. There's a core of young guys who should be making a big jump this year. Lawrence should be doing that. Tyrone Crawford should be. Gregory should be. The offensive line should get even more dominant. Hitchens should be better. Byron Jones should be better.

The Cowboys should be a better team simply for players progressing. Not saying this is all you rely on. But if you believe in these players and fill in the rest of your holes with solid veterans....its the winning approach they feel. They won 12 games with it two season ago. Went out and got Greg Hardy and took a step back.

Like the Eagirls and Deadskins did before them?

I understand Brandon Carr. May be even Crawford because I know he doesn't have the glorious sack numbers you guys love. But how in the world are the rest of those guys overpaid? Scandrick and Dez were hurt. Church and Free have favorable deals. On par with what everyone else is getting in the league.

Scandrick should not have gotten a raise.
Dez was overpaid from day 1.
Church is getting 4.25 million this year, way more than he deserves.
Free is a subway turnstyle.
Witten is grossly overpaid compared to today's tight ends.

Except Zeke's potential is far greater than Miller's.......

But you do know that Church's contract was backloaded. If i'm not mistake this is the last year of his deal. He signed a 4 year deal worth 8 million dollars lol. There are backups who get paid more than that lol.

When Witten signed his contract he was a perennial Pro Bowler.

Scandrick signed a 5 year 19 million dollar deal lol.

Doug Free a 3 year 15 million dollar deal.

And I don't know how you overpay for Dez when he's a top 5 receiver in the league and our best player on this team or one of them.

Unless i'm missing something? I'm no cap guru so maybe you're seeing something that i'm not?

Brandon Carr's contract is the ridiculous one i'll admit.

By you argument everyone in the league is overpaid.

You can cut Church and save 4.25 million. His cap hit is 4.75 and he has 500k in signing bonus.

Just because we didn't make these deals this year or last year doesn't change that these players are overpaid.

I wouldn't have paid a WR that much money.

Philosophy: never add veteran help along the defensive line. Always go into a season with only 3 good linemen, who will surely be worn down for trying to overcome the crap that surrounds them! See Demarcus Ware career in Dallas
