The Cowboys should be in this mode every season. Otherwise, what's the point?
Yep, and I think my message overall was mis interpreted by many. This wasn’t intended to be just about this year.

My point was with a record futility in NFL history with 12 consecutive playoff appearances without a championship appearance the Cowboys will be in championship game or bust mode until they finally knock down that door .

IF they did this sort of thing EVERY year then just maybe we would break through.

BUT watch: if we do not make a deep playoff run this year they will revert to type.

Yes, “we” represents all fans who are critical of our dysfunctional ownership.

Defending Dak is one thing but defending Jethro as well is a completely different level.
Well, duh, he is our GM as well as our Owner! He has done well in both lately. He deserves such praise.

That's true. In fact, for those of us that have been watching this team for decades, underachieving championships is nothing new. This has been the Cowboys predicament from the beginning, since Super Bowl I.

If you count NFL championships as conference games pre-merger, the Cowboys, under Schram and Landry, went to 12 conference championship games, winning 5. Winning some of those others would have put them in SB's 1,2, 7, 8, 15, 16, or 17.

Winning some of those earlier SB's would have changed the name of the SB trophy from the Lombardi to the Landry.

So even when the Cowboys were at their "peak" during their 20 consecutive winning seasons, they came away with two SB championships. Historically, they have always had to fight hard to get their championships. They have never been lucky.

The Patriots won their first three Super Bowls by three points each. The Cowboys have always won their Super Bowls by double digits. A close Super Bowl involving the Cowboys meant a Super Bowl loss. Their three Super Bowl losses were by a combined margin of 11 points. Until the Giants beat the Bills by one point in Super Bowl 25, the three closest Super Bowl losses were all by the Cowboys.

So, even though the Cowboys have fielded teams capable of winning a Super Bowl during the 2000's, the fact that they haven't is not a shock to me. Unlike the 2000's, however, the Landry teams finally did get it done.

It took a long time in "fan years" for the Cowboys to begin their ascent into perennial contenders. The Cowboys first five seasons 1960-1964 were losing seasons. After the 3rd season fans were beginning to call for Landry's head. They finally went 7-7 in 1965 and 1966 began their winning streak. It was Don Meredith's 7th year in the league.

The Cowboys went to the playoffs for the first time in 1966 and it took six consecutive seasons of playoff appearances to win their 1st Super Bowl.

I'm mentioning all this because fans should realize that, even when the Cowboys begin to go deep in the playoffs, that's still not the final phase.

The following is a fact:

The closer the team gets to winning a Super Bowl, the more devastating it feels to fans when they lose.

If you think losing a divisional playoff game feels funky, wait until the Cowboys lose a conference championship game. Those stick with you for life, that's another fact. At least, if you lose a Super bowl, your team was still there, playing the last game of the season.

I look at it this way. The longer it takes for the Cowboys to win another Super Bowl, the more the fans will have earned it and the more they will appreciate it. I think it could happen.

28 years tells me it will be 29.
I’m thinking it’s going to more like 40 years or more. As long as our GM remains the same.

Im not sure why we’d think a 90 year old GM/ owner is going to provide us a better opportunity than an 80 year old is?

While I’d agree with much of your message here and see the comparison you’re trying to make emotionally I’m not sure I’d compare our current era struggles to that of our Expansion years and early frustrations in playoffs leading up to our first championship.

First of all our first two playoff appearances in 1966 and 67 were culminated with a championship / NFL title game appearance . In our next two playoff seasons in 1968 and 69 we bowed out early . And then of course in 1970 it’s our 1st conference championship win and Super Bowl appearance.

And while during our historic 20 years of consecutive winning seasons we did appear in 12 championship games . So again, not a comparison I’d make.

This era we are making a historic futility mark with 12 playoffs now culminating over almost 3 decades without a championship appearance .

80+ Year olds are not innovators. Regards of their position. I'll leave it like that.
