Cowboys Insider: Slam the brakes on Rico Gathers

Dallas Cowboys insider and ESPN writer Todd Archer warns fans to temper their expectations when it comes to former basketball player turned rookie tight end Rico Gathers.

With their final selection in the 2016 NFL Draft, the Dallas Cowboys selected a basketball player. Yes, you read that right. Baylor power forward Rico Gathers to be more specific.

Although Gathers hadn’t played organized football since the eighth grade, the Cowboys opted to use a sixth round selection on him simply based on his size and potential alone. And the former Mr. Basketball out of Louisiana has plenty of both.

Measuring in at a whopping 6’6″ and weighing 273 pounds, Gathers was a tenacious rebounder at Baylor, averaging 11.4 points and 9.1 rebounds per game during his final year with the Bears. The 22-year old is hoping his aggressiveness, body control and timing will translate over and make him a big time red zone target for quarterback Tony Romo.

But for fans thinking the Cowboys drafted the next Antonio Gates, one Cowboys insider warns that you should really temper your expectations for this very raw developmental player.

“Since you said five tight ends, I’m assuming you have Rico Gathers on the roster. I would say to anybody who feels that way to not just tap the brakes but slam on them,” ESPN’s Todd Archer recently responded to a Twitter question. “He has miles to go. Miles. He is athletic but he doesn’t know what he’s doing yet. In organized team activities and minicamp, he took only a few team snaps. Right now, I think the practice squad would be the most likely destination…”

It's early, but if he can't get a heavy workload in OTAs in an attempt to expedite his learning process, when will he get the reps?

Should have gone after the big target Matthews from BYU as an UDFA. Although, the story hasn't concluded on Rico it really just began, soooooo I'll shutup.

Well, it's seems like a 3-4 year project since he has " miles" to go. Tired of these projects like Wilcox, showers, gathers.

There is no such thing as a 3-4 year project in the NFL. If you can't elevate yourself out of project status in a year or two, you don't stick around.

Anybody who thought Gathers would have an impact on the field this year after not playing organized football since eighth grade grade doesnt live in reality. I said when was drafted, I just hoped he could learn to block at this level.

He was a player the Cowboys would have taken a flyer on in the 7th round if they had a pick. Since they didn't they took him in the 6th round. They seem to covet priority UDFA signings with their last couple of picks and I disagree with that thinking. You're essentially ignoring draftable players still on the board.

It seemed like a wasted pick to me. Sign the guy as a free agent.

In the brief OTA videos he looked like a less coordinated Jason Witten running routes.

I think we wasted more than one pick.

This brings about and interesting question... what happened to the evaluation of Cowboys TEs in the draft and FA?

For a while we were pretty solid. Since John Phillips career was derailed by a bad knee, our TE prospects have been terrible.

At least I can keep the pedal floored on zeke

Right now, I think the practice squad would be the most likely destination.......... lol I dont think you draft him in 6th to put him
on a practice squad so some other team can pick him up at no cost.
It isnt that hard to learn football.
They should be able to use him occasionally this season.
