So is he going to be a safety or CB? He has played 2 years as both

he'll start at cb, potentially moving to safety later- that's my guess. Love those kinds of (versatile) players!

This is merely a comment to stir Cowboys Nation. He says nothing about Jones' ability to play, just that our needs were greater on the defensive line and at running back.

But ...

1. All the first-round pass rushers were gone, except for Gregory, who no one wanted in the first and ...
2. This is the best draft for running backs in years. And I'm pretty sure we'll address that need later tonight.

NFL draft Winners and Losers: Get ready for more superstar rookie WRs

http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/nfl-s...ore-superstar-rookie-receivers-045734487.html

WINNERS
Dallas Cowboys and their restraint

Last year the flashy first-round pick for the Cowboys would have been Johnny Manziel. They took guard Zack Martin. That boring pick became an All-Pro as a rookie.

The headline-grabbing pick this year would have been a running back. Any running back. Someone to replace DeMarco Murray. There’s really nobody on the roster now who is all too enticing for that role. But the Cowboys didn’t reach. They took cornerback Byron Jones of Connecticut, a very athletic player who fills another big need that’s tougher to fill.

The Cowboys get made fun of for making impulse buys. But that didn’t happen on Thursday. They’ll get a running back at some point. They just didn’t reach for one in the first round.

:clap::clap::clap::clap::clap:

Somebody who gets it.

for the 27th pick in the first round, I'm ok with Byron Jones. Not likely in this draft to get a "wow" guy there. I'm more in favor of trying to build the lines up in the first round, especially because I see 3 defensive ends on the roster right now, and 1 of them won't be there for 10 games (currently). Still 2 days to find a DE that can at least contribute, and technically if we are in a bind through suspension, lack of productive de, we could slide Crawford to LDE because he has "position flex", although I think we all prefer him at the 3.

Nothing like draft grades 12 hours after the pick. We're still regretting that whole Frederick thing and how it crippled our franchise.

And the Martin pick.

When you're picking in the middle and bottom of the draft, you need to get solid players. Those are the players that stabilize your roster. Solid, stable, dependable, teachable players.

I'm really excited about the direction of this franchise. I don't know a whole lot about Jones. Didn't really know that much about Frederick or Martin. But to see how well they've played since being drafted and how the team is improving leads me to believe the Cowboys - FINALLY - know what they're doing.

And if they believe Jones has what it takes then I'm okay with the pick. We've been looking for a free safety for the longest time. Even though Landon Collins was on the board and was supposedly the highest ranked safety, he's a liability in coverage. In this day and age where the passing game reigns supreme, you need ball hawkers in the secondary.

People that hate this pick are either stupid or just not paying attention. We could've been facing starting the season with a total ofONE starting quality CB (Scandrick) if Carr is cut or Claiborne isn't ready to go (not that he's startig quality anyway). We did not reach for Jones. We took him where he was projected and his was the position of greatest need by far. Yes, I wat one or two DL,but we took the best player for us.

Dave Moore was just on the Ticket, talking about this. Cowboys will not pick up Mo's 5th year option, but we knew that. But he said they will make that official soon. Carr's status still up in the air, and Scandrick not whining [my words not his] about his contract.

Also the last 4 1st round draft picks were walk in starters, and the 5th was Dez, didn't start until hid 5th game.
Not saying Jones will start, but with the CB situation right now, would not rule it out.

Get used to it Cowboys fans. If we are indeed building something we hope becomes a stable winner.... These first rounds are going to become more and more boring.

I'll take it for excitement in December and Beyond.

If we at least look at sheer volume... A guy with over 200 tackles in the secondary is St least a guy willing to throw his hat in the ring.

NFL draft winners, losers: Jets grab a steal, Cowboys whiff

LOSERS

Players with character questions: The same couldn't be said for Nebraska DE Randy Gregory, LSU OL La'el Collins and Oklahoma WR Dorial Green Beckham, all players with obvious first-round ability but each saddled with red flags of the first order.

Chip Kelly: Rumors of his pursuit of Mariota hit overdrive Thursday evening with the Eagles coach offering everything he had plus the Liberty Bell and the Rocky statue. No dice.

Tight ends: The next one picked will be the first one of 2015.

Cowboys: CB Byron Jones may become a fine player. He won't sack any quarterbacks, nor will he run for 100-plus yards on a weekly basis.

I would steer clear of calling people "stupid" because it's simply not productive. Having said that, I agree with you. We're preparing not only for next year but the future.

Good pick, IMO.

Or his fingers. Just saying. .. cb tackle volume means someone caught the ball or ran the ball that got through to the secondary.

You can't please everyone and when you try, you end up pleasing no one. The Cowboys filled a need and aren't done yet. The media can suck it.

They said the same thing when we drafted Frederick...
