Cowboys lingering problem on defense is still their pass rush

He is rated a lot better than I thought he was. That makes me feel better after finding that out.
This little schtick got started on these boards that he's not good. And the silly part is that they were comparing him to the wrong player. Gary is the SAM(strongside LB). SAM position: "The SAM is typically the largest and most physical of the LBs tasked w/ taking on blocks from TEs or FBs and stopping the run. They prevent outside runs from breaking past the perimeter of the D. They often cover the TE in man or rush the QB during blitz calls.

Think about that. The WLB(Weakside LB) rushes the QB a high percentage of snaps. The SAM does not.

There isn't a proven Micah Parsons-type pass rusher. Parsons is obviously gone, and Dallas no longer has that one player offenses have to account for on virtually every passing down. That puts more pressure on the rest of the defensive line to create pressure collectively. Dallas needs someone to emerge as "the guy." Donovan Ezeiruaku is one of the biggest candidates. He's entering his second season and is considered extremely important to the Cowboys' plans for rebuilding the pass rush.

The young edge rushers have potential, but potential isn't production. The pass rush hasn't consistently collapsed the pocket in camp. While Dallas' DB's have been creating tight throwing windows, the pass rush hasn't consistently gotten home. That's pretty concerning because good coverage can only last so long if the quarterback has time!

Dallas has added more talent around the pass rush, including Rashan Gary and Von Miller and the DT's are considerably more talented. That means the Cowboys don't necessarily need one player to replace everything Parsons gave them. They just need guys who can consistently win their matchups.
Run defense is gonna be awesome

None of the starters played so how in the hell can you declare the pass rush sucks? Please explain that. Are you Johnny Carson?
I don't know. How was I able to correctly determine this team's inability to win anything of note for the last 30 years while you were wrong year after year?

How do I know the Rams will be better than the Jets this year without a game being played yet?

Why do people have resumes?

It's called past performance indicating future success. Look into it.

Sure, but that was as easy as predicting a prom girl skirt lift.

There is always an up and coming . And some have a keener eye predicting it than others.

But there is also validity in recent history and current trends .

You’d think with Cowboys recent history we might be a little more gun-shy in pulling the trigger without more evidence.
Just saying…

Hold on. Recent history actually suggests the opposite. Ever since the GB playoff debacle, Jerry has been completely different. Especially this last offseason, where our moves were completely un-Jerrylike. Everything made sense. So, if we're really examining history, this last offseason needs to be examined heavily.

I know you're aware that I haven't believed in this team for a long time. Suddenly, I'm seeing reasons to believe. If anyone is not, they just don't want to.

But it was against guys who will be collecting unemployment in the next few months.

Williams and Liufau playing late into the 4th quarter suggests their roster spots are in question.
Not really.
Sometimes they play players with different units because they want to see what others can do surrounded by some other players.

We do not know the intent of PS games play calling or how and when players play.

They were down to 2 TE's available. Schoonmaker and Kurtz. How many thought, oh no, Schoonmaker may be on the bubble ( more than usual, and unfairly ). He had 8 plays and the rest went to Kuntz the rest of the game.

Maybe they wanted to see some LB's with the 2nd unit. They know what hey have in Williams.
Now Liafau, I had him on the bubble to make the team. I do not have him on my 53. Which all of this means nothing.

I think they were trying to protect Schoonmaker from injury. Could be because of injuries to Triggs or maybe he could be trade bait. But you’re right. Can’t tell much from preseason games. The Cowboys “analysts” are even saying if they keep 5 WR’s Brown is out and onto the practice squad. They don’t think he’ll get picked up by another team.

I look at it from the opponent perspective and that's if that opposing team has a good enough oline, QB and WRs to match up mainly against the Cowboy edge rushers and DTs.

IF Williams and Clark can make the edge guys look better than they actually are just like Philly's pair of Carter and Davis does, then the pass rushers will be effective.
If not, then they won't.

But all bets are off if Miller has some sort of fountain of youth time warp miracle season and gets 10 plus sacks.
Then that would change the whole dynamic and the Cowboy defense would not have to be so dependent on their defensive tackles.
Because outside of Miller, all the rest of the edges are jags.

We are seeing it. Man, you gotta ignore a ton of facts and evidence to not see it.
But we haven’t seen our starting roster against opponents starting rosters yet.

I admit . It’s very difficult for me to believe without seeing it first. I do agree however we have made some upgrades defensively. How those impact the results throughout the season will greatly impact my belief moving forward.

And we have made some unlike Jethro moves before this era which uplifted but didn’t get us over the hump. Usually cause his other tendencies still came into play interfering, undermining, etc .

We are seeing it. Man, you gotta ignore a ton of facts and evidence to not see it.
Not saying don’t see the upgrades on roster . I think we all get and see the defense will be much better .

But how good and how far that takes us is still yet to be seen.

So yea, defense will be much better. No one is denying that. Not me anyway.

And I’m certainly no expert but the beat writers I follow here locally still believe our pass rush could be the weak link or greatest unknown heading in with upgraded defense.

Doesn’t mean it won’t be enough or upgraded as well but with so much new talent added an unknown quantity. Or lingering problem as stated .

We shall see but something I’ll be watching closely.

Not worried since no starter was playing

and we have had great Pass Rushers in the past and what did it get us?

NOTHING.

Ware and Parsons; one in the HOF and one probably will get there.

Show me the hardware we got from having them?
One can make the same comment pertaining to our elite $60 million quarterback.

In your opinion what do they have in Williams?

He has a motor and is athletic. Shown he is quick to get to the QB and pursue.
His issue is the mental mistakes. Jumping off sides, or a bone headed play here and there. They are not as many as some say.But they seem to happen at the worst times.

Having some nagging injuries, and bad DC's, I think he needs one that instills some discipline. And maybe Parker is that guy.

Yes, the additions on defense has shored up the interior of DL and hopefully brought much support for run defense but without a premiere pass rusher can we put enough pressure on QB’s or will we leave our secondary vulnerable again.

Obviously we are concerned or wouldn’t have brought in Miller who is on last leg of his career.

So despite all the optimism towards a defense which has obviously been upgraded on many fronts this remains a major concern which could thwart an improved roster on defense and top 5 offense from making the playoffs.
Im sure the schemes he is running in preseason arent the same as regular season. Not to mention the starters arent playing

Did the Seahawks have a premier pass rusher or just D-line as a whole that put pressure on the QB?

2025 Seahawks Sack Leaders
  • Byron Murphy II (DT): 7.0 sacks
  • Leonard Williams (DT): 7.0 sacks
  • Uchenna Nwosu (LB): 7.0 sacks
  • DeMarcus Lawrence (LB): 6.0 sacks

They had a DL that created pressure and caused havoc .

Will the Cowboys? It’s an unknown at this point and reason for concern.

Bottom line is he has the traits you mentioned, but he's still not making many plays.

The defensive coaches saw fit to bring him back because they felt they could unlock his potential.

Some figured that CP could resurrect him, but i don't see any evidence of it on the field.

Granted we don't see what the coaches see during training camp( practice, scrimmages and whatnot). I just don't see the development.
He's basically the same guy.

Interior disruption is more important to super bowl contention than edge rushers. Yes, you do need both.

They had a DL that created pressure and caused havoc .

Not an unknown. Parts may be unknow, sure, but overall there's a ton of knowns.

You’re too ignorant to understand what being optimistic and hopeful does for a person vs someone always being bitter with your “they haven’t won anything in 30 years” crying.
You were doing well, and then started the insult war. Be better.
