I'm a little leary about trading a first, but the rest of next years picks are fair game. IMO, we're a season ending injury of Romo, away from being a potential top 5 draft pick.

Dead on.

And someone mentioned the plug and play QBs of late like Tannehill and even Locker... Those two aren't in the class of a Luck or RG3. Those two only look any good because they're taking over for absolute nobodies. If we who have watched Romo for seven years had to watch a Tannehill (or especially a Locker), we'd be pretty disgusted.

Well, some would see some raw talent and be perfectly happy with it, I guess. But we definitely wouldn't win any more games.

The problem is that we will be hitting that point in a few short years anyway unless they decide to actually draft a quarterback. Jerry and friends have never been very big on doing that for whatever reason (even those lean years between Aikman and Romo), so unless they change their minds real soon then we may literally see Locker he hits the Free Agent market in 2013.

This is the smartest thing I've read in this thread. It'd be more sensible to trade him for Alex Smith level compensation than it would be to just let him walk. Can't believe anyone who understands how NFL free agency works could think letting him just play it out and leave is the smart move.
Exactly. Letting Romo play out his contract is NOT a real option. Anyone that suggests it can't be thinking of what the results would actually be or has zero grasp on his contract situation.

But wouldn't we feel foolish if that did happen, and we trade a Top 40 pick in 2014 for a 3rd round pick in 2013?

Not necessarily. If we traded a 2014 2nd straight up for a 2013 3rd and got a good player, not anyone crazy that becomes an all pro, but even a guy who we can tell after year 1 would be a 10 year starter at G or C, then I would be ok with that

How many "good" players do the Cowboys currently have on their roster that were acquired via a trade down on draft day? The best players on the team consist of 2 undrafted free agents who came with no risk that the Cowboys were smart enough to hang onto and the rest of the corp group consists of players the Cowboys either traded up for or stayed pat.

It's silly to point out that the Pats have had success trading down that's a well organized team that has a HOF head coach and an owner who's hires qualified people who know what they're doing to run his team. There's a reason they compete for SB's every year.

So, we should never try to emulate a successful, proven strategy because we are too, what? To stupid to be able to adopt such practices? We should limit ourselves to ineffectual process because we can't improve to the point of being smart enough to take advantage of such strategies?

No, I think you have it backwards. Doing what I hear you describing is silly.

It doesn't work (heck no business works) unless your organization has a very strong and united front office. The GM, owner and HCoach work in sync and everyone in the organization knows each of their responsibilities so that they are on the same page. The message to the players and coaches is consistent from the top down so everyone knows where they stand and expectations are in order. One clown at the top who's ego is above everything and everyone else is a recipe for mayhem throughout the organization. You can only go so far with the talent you have on the field. At some point players start thinking for the good of themselves instead of the good of the team much like the clown.

If Jerry wanted to emulate a successful, proven strategy he would go out and hire a solid head coach like he did Jimmy Johnson in 89 and allow them to handle all football moves. The only strategy he follows now is that of the late Al Davis he's been doing that for 19 years. Hard to emulate a successful proven strategy when you have a stubborn, egotistical owner who refuses to hire a solid head coach and relinquish their GM duties.

Pats made a living off of trading down and acquiring talent and more future picks.

The Cowboys aren't run like the Pats not even close. Bob Kraft isn't an egotistical control freak like Jerry Jones that's why his team competes for SB's every year while the Cowboys are always sitting home for the playoffs. Trading down hasn't worked for the Cowboys because Jerry is the one in control. There's not one "good" player on the roster that was acquired via a trade down.

We is headed for another 8-8 year before we make our push for the playoffs in 2014. any team would be crazy to give away anybody of value for our No. 16 or so pick next year.
