Cowboys | No guarantee team will have Thanksgiving game after 2009
Fri, 30 Jan 2009 18:44:49 -0800

Charean Williams, of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, reports the Dallas Cowboys are not guaranteed to host a Thanksgiving Day game in 2010. NFL commissioner Roger Goodell said, "I understand it's a great tradition in Detroit and Dallas. [Moving the game around] is something that our owners have raised from time to time. It will not change for this season. As to whether ownership feels the same, we will discuss it as we get later in the year. We certainly will raise it."

Goodell is a moron. No other way to put it. Take the team that is the leagues leader in ratings and has played on Thanksgiving every year since 1966 just so some owners can be happy.

Even taking the Lions out would be stupid. They have played on Thanksgiving every year since WW2, IIRC.

Goodell has certainly not been friendly to Dallas, and I agree that this is a stupid move from a ratings stand point. Oh, lets ruin some tradition while we are at it.

I never thought the next commissioner would actually make me miss the days of pro-49ers Paul Tagliabue.

I think he's been more than fair to Dallas..Letting Pacman have 2 chances...He's a good commish, dont hate on him!

Goodell is a terrible commish. he's changing too many things and is trying for more. a qb can't even get sacked anymore without it being a penalty on the defense these days.

Go ahead jerk and when the ratings come in you will see why those before you kept the tradition and once again Dallas will bail the NFL out by taking a game no one wanted.

Whats wrong with putting it to the owners?
That is who really run things you know.
No one seems to really care all that much about having those games- the interest from other teams seems tepid at best.

If the Cowboys are not playing on Thanksgiving Day I will not bother cooking the turkey either.

Unless of course it's Tony Romo.

If Jerry allows this to happen he will have a full out rebellion to deal with here in Dallas.

No he won't.

I don't think it is a good idea to mess with tradition but things eventually change and I wouldn't mind seeing other teams get it.

Furthermore, if the Cowboys and Detroit are not guranteed the game after 2009, I think there is a good chance that the Thanksgiving Day Games are alot more competitive and entertaining as now the NFL will be able to pick who is playing.

Alot of people don't have NFL Network. Up until 3 months ago, I didn't have it.

Regardless, on Thanksgiving, I wouldn't mind seeing the "best" matchup, as oppose to the same two teams.

They are not going to change it.
Personally I would like to see an afc game that has the afc champ from the previous season host it, and the nfc champ from the previous season host the other, the third game could alternate between Dallas and Detroit to keep some link to the old tradition.

I have had few problems with Goodell so far but this would turn me against very quickly. I could possibly understand taking the game from Det because their game is rarely competitive. At least our game is usually a good one.

I don't get the competitive advantage crap. The thursday night games aren't considered an advantage it's the same thing.

From the fans' perspective, it would be smart to make the games flex games and broadcast two good matchups, instead of the dribble we often get on Thanksgiving. From a ratings perspective, I don't see a huge dropoff in ratings if they moved the game around. The NFL knows they have a captive audience on Thanksgiving. The NFL games are the only thing worth watching on TV on Thanksgiving and many folks want to escape family members and will watch just about any game on Thanksgiving.

He did that because he knew it would destroy us. Give a man enough rope....
