Marty Ball is a philosophy of football associated with and named after former NFL and UFL head coach Marty Schottenheimer.

In simple terms, it means a focus on the running game, with passing used only to further the running game.

Schottenheimer emphasizes offensive attacks that work as follows:

Second down: another rushing play.
Third down: a pass attempt.
Fourth down: punt (or field goal, if within range).

McCarthy historically leans towards the pass. I imagine Schottenheimer was brought in to instill a physical mindset and philosophy that opposes the finesse approach we saw from Kellen, but I doubt we lean more than 55% run.

I don’t think the Cowboys are going back to 90s when it comes to offense but they want to be more efficient running the football. MM remembers the Packers and Jaguars games last season. We did not run efficiently in both games and began to pass to much without threatening to run the football with double digit leads. The Cowboys offense was at its best under MM in 2021 when we ran the 12 personnel.

Living in Chief territory, I witnessed first hand his entire tenure at the Chiefs (1989–1998). He won a lot of games but not in January. Effective but not flashy offense making it as far as the Championship game once but lost to the Chargers.

No question he had a conservative style of coaching that rubbed some the wrong way. Not sure how that offense would sell in Dallas. Throw in a few twists for todays game and I can see it being highly effective. That likely falls on McCarthy with a passing game with his fingerprints all over it.

Be careful what you wish for.....Although Marty was eighth in career wins with 205...never made it to the SB.

MM has never been a run guy. Everybody is buying all of this nonsense. It won’t happen. BS is the OC in name only. MM is calling plays. It’ll be a pass heavy offense.

I still think that the primary impetus for this change were the losses against Green Bay and Jacksonville where Dallas gave up huge late leads. When you hear Mike talk, he is kind of dancing around the subject without saying it.

The run plays may look different but I suspect that if the score is close the offense is going to look like the rather pass happy stuff you saw out of MM in GB. Late in games with a big lead Dallas wants to be able to "run the ball when the other team knows you are going to run the ball"*

I agree with your assessment, but remember MM had someone named AR at the helm who happened to bail him out multiple times. Scrambling and finding the open guy. He drove a stake into the Cowboys more times than i care to remember. We got.....nevermind. Big, Big difference.

Marty’s son is the OC in name only….so why does everyone think he will be like his dad.
Brian is not the HC and won’t be calling plays. And therefore because his dad never got to a SB is a far cry from what his son and MM plan to do.

Dak has only lost 4 games of 103 total when:
Cowboys greater than 100 yards rushing.
Opponent less than 100 yards rushing.

Scotty was hated in Seattle(public enemy no 1).i can see Fans turning on him if his run heavy attack doesnt work.I am all for running the ball well but we still need to score a lot of points to keep up with the top teams in the NFL.
