Olshansky is extremely strong. Don't be so sure this move would be to replace Canty player for player. Olshansky played DT at Oregon, as I recall. He is only 308 but he is 6-6 so he could put weight on and not lose much. This may be a move the Cowboys are considering because they see him at NT as opposed to DE.

I don't know.

6'6 may be a little long to play NT. The better NTs are under 6'4.

And I'm not sure if Olshansky can put on more weight w/out becoming more injury prone. I used to live in San Diego and bumped into the guy a couple of times. He is all of 6'6 and 300 lbs. But he has very little fat on his frame. Don't think he can put on much more muscle and putting on fat sounds like more injuries, not less.

Louis Castillo (the other starting DE) is another story. Castillo is 6'3 and already 310. He could put on another 10-15 lbs and shift to NT, in Wade's D, no problem.

I actually wouldn't pay any DE a large amount of money...I think Hatcher and Bowen could fill in that spot along with a draft pick for depth..or draft a NT and move Rat over to DE. It's ALOT cheaper and will get the same result..

I'd rather save the money and spend it more wisely...

I like Castillo as well. I liked him at Northwestern. Wanted to draft him but no luck. It's true about height. Typically, NTs are short and stubby. I don't know about Olshanky's ability to put on weight. If in fact, he was not able to do this, then he would not work at NT, as you say. I do know that while at Cal, he was pretty effective as a 1 and 3 Technique DT.

If we sign and/or draft a Big NT, I can see Rat being moved to end!!

I hope we find a monster for the middle!!

I wouldn't sign either of them. 3-4 DEs aren't worth large contracts. Draft a replacement.

Agree.

Neither Canty nor Igor are special players... and only a special player at 3-4 DE deserves big money (think Bruce Smith). With either Canty or Igor, we know we won't have a special player... but if we draft a guy there is always that chance.

There are a ton of players that could be solid at DE like Canty and Igor. They can be had in the draft.

Good point about getting a guy in the draft. I would only bring back Canty if the price is right...he seems to want a lot more money than his play justifies.
