Not sure that I would say it's a lack of explosiveness, I think hes simply played in a very read & react heavy scheme in college, and now he is being asked to change his style. He's now having to learn to read blocks as he's attacking which takes a ton of reps to basically rewire his brain and muscle memory. I'd expect that by mid season he is a different player than he is today.

Not to mention that 330 pound guys don’t have the get off of Aaron Donald, or even a 300 pound DT.

He will work on it and improve, but a huge, strong guy pushing the center back in the lap of the QB just isn’t going to need a ton of get off.

These huge guys are just a little different.

Agree with that but that is where I think mazi is worth the pick though. The guy is a freak athlete who I agree will never be an Aaron Donald type off the ball but I think has the upside to play like a 300lb DT but with that 330lb power. He just has zero idea how to do that yet as he’s never been asked.

Yeah, he’ll get there. He has good explosion for a huge guy.

It is just comical that we’re having to have this conversation after game 1. Hell, we were having it after preseason game 1, lol.

“Choppin it up”. May have just set the record for saying the word “Man” in 8 minutes

I stopped counting at 132….

But yes, I agree that Mazi is amazing and a future HOFer

I just turned the volume all the way down and watched the tape. It was fine that way, lol.

Some plays focusing on Mazi Smith analyzed by Someone named Choppin It Up with 2Timez at youtube. Mazi looked pretty good to me. One thing I noticed was on these handful of plays was that Mazi was not double-teamed. I thought he would be double-teamed more. He is strong, pushes into the backfield, and can also move pretty well.

Nice job on the film. Would have liked to see some plays where he didnt do so well. Like personality of the author, but hard to listen to. Must have said "man" 100 times.

He needs a lot.

Tries to bull rush everything.

No pass rush skills.

Common excuse is that 1 tech can’t pass rush.

But Hankins has 15 career sacks.
Slow off the ball still and gets stood up very quickly. Had good push on a couple of those, but then couldnt disengage to make the tackle. Throwing the guy to the ground after the play is by you, does little.

He has plenty of work to do but the potential is there.

Quick off the ball, but stands up, losing the leverage battle. The slow off the ball thingie is not correct.

Lots of work, but this guy has the potential to be freaky good.

Parly, maybe, but it's his bad habit of standing up at the snap that mostly gets him. He's got a very good first step, but that is negated when he stands up, losing the leverage battle. He absolutely must learn to play low.

I have said it before... NTs take a long time to develop. I just want to see that Mazi isn't lost out there, and is showing flashes of talent.

Time and coaching can take care of the rest. But time and coaching can't create 1st round physical talent, and it's very hard to rescue a rook once he's hit that deer-in-headlights point. There are tons of guys with all-world talent who busted when they checked out mentally.

Mazi didn't embarrass himself against the Giants, and he showed flashes of Different Dude level strength when he just ran straight over an NFL starting guard. For one game at least, he looks on track.

No, you're just hungry for tacos. Go to the local taco joint and all your worries will disappear. Mazi Smith looks like he will be a very good player doing what big DTs are supposed to do. He will never be a sack machine, but he will be double-teamed and push the pocket and allow others to make plays.
