there are times when draft picks are important and very valuable and then there are times when draft picks need to be used to immidiately improve on an already existing product.
OBVIOUSLY those of you who are calling this scenario " crazy " don't know who Marcus McNeil is or have seen very little of him, if at all. If you need more reference, take a look at the Chargers/Cowboys game from last year. If you don't want to do that, then be assured that McNeil is one of the best, young Left Tackles in the NFL. The Chargers are playing hardball with him as a political move by the owner. He wants the city/county to build him a new stadium in downtown San Diego and him low balling McNeil is a way for him telling their fans that he has no money. Remember that he did the same with LaDainian Tomlinson when LT was in his prime, which is unheard of.
But putting aside all that since what matters is the nuts and bolts, ie: football skills. Had we chosen McNeil instead of Barbie in 2006 draft, you better believe that Jerrah would have him signed to a long contract by now. He's the type of player that you lock forever, no questions asked, until he proves he can't play anymore.
Now, I'm as reluctant to give up picks as anybody because, as this year proved, ANYTHING can happen in the draft and ANYBODY can drop to your spot who wasn't supposed to. Having said that, this bird in hand ( if the opportunity presents itself ) is going to be worth more than whomever falls to the late 20's ( hopefully 32nd pick ) in the draft next year.
As far as the 3rd rounder is concerned, that's irrelevant. This team's scouting depatment has proven over the past several years that it could find ANY type of player in ANY round during the draft and AFTER it. If you don't believe me, take a look at your starting Pro Bowl QB, your starting Pro Bowl WR, and your starting Pro Bowl TE.
