Please refresh my memory where Jerry has set the market on one player....

He started the big bucks signings back in the middle nineties
and has been known around the league as a guy that will
spend what it takes to get a player.
One that comes to mind is Deon Sanders. 30 million
was a mind blower in that day

He did big signings right up to SJones grabbing the check book
and put in a more financially responsible system. Maybe around the time
Red was named head coach. Jerry has always been known as a
big spender around the league.Maybe not investing wisely now thats
GREED UPON.

I think what is aggravating for most fans, is we don't not just get the big time guys. We're skipping on most middle tier guys as well.

There is nothing wrong with letting the market come to you. Yet, would be very nice to sign a couple of starters at reasonable price.

Last year we signed,

Keith Rivers, Ray Agnew, Jed Collins, Jasper Brinkley, Corey White, Efe Obada. Who half didn't make the squad or were cut.

McFadden, Hardy and Gachkar made the squad. McFadden was the only one who made an impact.

Once again, not saying break the bank. Just would be nice to get a starting Corner, Rush end and 1tech via free agency.

Why would I be glad my team isn't using every tool possible to improve?

We drafted MClaiborne, should we never draft a top 6 player again?

Just because Carr didn't work out you don't stop signing FAs forever. Just get better at picking them.

Fans can harp and rue over the misses but GMs have to have short memories. If you miss, learn from it and move on.[/quo

Big dollar contracts seldom pay off well for any owner. It's prudent to get out of the big name contracts
There is evidence of this every year. Last year was the Suh snooze.

Last couple of years they have been digging out of a cap hole.
This year they'll sign a few bigger guys but I dont think there'll be
any wow signings.

There are two distinct reasons why good free agents choose the teams they do.

1. Get that last great contract. They simply choose the team that offers to pay them the most.

Or:

2. They have illustrious careers, made some good money, but there is one last goal left to achieve and that's win a championship. They pick a team that would be considered a legitimate contender.

The first group doesn't really have a lot of motivation to do anything, they get paid "amigo money" regardless of their or their new team's performance.

The second group is more likely to give their new team a discount and will play their hearts out for what they perceive to be one last opportunity.

This is why the good teams seem to do better in free agency and poor teams seem to extend their suffering.

At some points in the past the Cowboys were the team in the second group. Clearly, they could now be the victimized team in the first.

You do realize they signed the pair of them to cheap deals that left it on their plate to live up to it?

I am all for contracts like that.

But for whatever reason, we rarely get those. Much less with those kind of results.

Well that's not what the topic was originally. They were free agents and signed by Seattle. Talib and Tj Ward signed big deals w/ Denver so there are different ways to do this, but to pretend free agency never works is ridiculous. I am all for a one year deal with Mario Williams for 8-9 mill or on the flipside making a strong long term offer to a younger player with upside still.

Set your sights a bit lower and you might get your wish. I hear on DC.com that the team is looking hard at Adrian Clayborn who was with Atlanta last year
and won't break the bank. The Cowboys are all about bargains in FA. If you want big money go elsewhere is Stephen's motto now.

Actually we are close to not making the 89% spending floor.

He has been real tight with the cash since BCarr and wasn't real loose before that.

So you think for the last 10 years we haven't spent most or all of our cap space?
And as for right now, before the spending has even begun, I don't see that as an accurate representation.

There is a difference between a bargain and a player like Clayborn.

We were more aggressive when the cap was stagnant during the lockout.

Since the CBA the revenues have skyrocketed and we have gone conservative.

This makes little sense since Romo isn't getting younger.

Now we have 40m in space, no dead money and no desire to sign anyone.

Not all FAs are bad, just do your homework like with draft picks.

Exactly. Guy played only 472 snaps and got 3 sacks. I like the price that Atlanta signed him for, one year--4.5 million. But knowing Rod an the defense, he will be counted on to take a heavy amount of snaps.

So let me get this straight......You are gonna ride the coat tails of Jerry signing (20 years ago)....Deion Sanders contract with the Dallas Cowboys (seven years, $35 million with a $12.9 million signing bonus) as a sign he isn't tight with the dollar?

That was over 20 years ago....And a one time deal. What has he done since that made sense?

Every time Jerry has spent big on a player it's been a bad investment.

Barber...
Romo..
Lee...
Carr...

Point is...Jerry has never been wise when it comes to signing free agents. Maybe that's why he doesn't do it. The only other player I can say made sense was La'roy Glover. Other than that....It been one donk after another.:(

DWare, LDavis, TNewman, Witten and Romo turned out very good. The book on Lee, TSmith and Dez is still open

Awesome...just freaking AWESOME.:mad::mad: Can't wait to see the same sorry bunch that went 4-12 w/ no noticable improvements in the off season.

I real front office would have slashed and burned half a dozen guys by now. But we are too afraid that we can't replace the likes of Doug Free or Brandon Carr.

Pathetic:rolleyes:

Did you read the article?

Nice write up bro, I tend to agree with your position. Free agents either "want to get paid" or they "want a ring".

Unfortunately, no free agent is looking at Dallas and thinking that is where I want to go to get a ring. They are going to pick New England, Denver, Arizona, Carolina, ect.....

Hate to say it, but its true...........free agents come to Dallas to get a payday, not win a ring (see Brandon Carr)
