The run game was non-existent from a physicality standpoint. Football is physical and the Cowboys weren‘t which is why they struggle in the playoffs. Just imagine playing center for the Cowboys and getting pushed back on almost every run play or pass protect. If you’re getting dominated like that it’s a hopeless feeling knowing there’s nothing you can do except cheat. That’s what happened on a couple of positions on the line. And then there’s are wonderful interior line that you think is good enough to win a Super Bowl. No, you’ve probably never said that but you have numerous times put all the blame on the QB. And as for your last statement, what’s the hardest part of building a dominant run game? Dominant run blocking. Cowboys have addressed that at least on paper. Hopefully the RB position hasn’t been settled yet.
No, you are too used to defending the guy to get everyone’s position correctly. I know that I’m capable of actually being more honest about his shortcomings than you. Most of the time, I point out that he’s been a good QB that can look very good/great when the environment is right. I have pointed out that the environment for him to achieve a SB run is exceedingly difficult to build-which is the foundation of moving on from a guy that continues to become exceedingly expensive as he gets nearer to his shelf life expiration.
That’s not the same as placing all blame onto one individual. It’s called pragmatism. Part of accepting some of his shortcomings is the understanding (and acceptance) that some of his success is due to his surrounding talent. Last season, the OL was not very successful at run blocking but were very good at pass blocking in the majority of games last season including the first half of the GB game. This QB’s shortcomings are highlighted when the passing game must succeed against better opposing defenses when the stage gets largest/brightest.
I agree that he would greatly benefit from an elite run game. It is difficult to build a great run game, both from a personnel standpoint and a philosophical standpoint. The team uses the short and midrange passing game in place of a run game-and that’s not just because of the strengths of the team-it’s the primary philosophy of the signal caller/coordinator. It’s the West Coast offense-and it will continue to be even with better run blocking. There were 4 teams that I would consider elite running teams from last season. The Ravens, 49ers, Lions, and Dolphins. They all had better run blocking (and backs) than this squad, but more importantly had core philosophy/scheme that translates to more success rushing the ball. That was built over several years with both personnel and coaching decisions.
