Well then sure, throw out common sense and listen to the NFL.

Honest question. Do you believe the Cowboys were the 8th best defense in the NFL last year?
That depends. On yardage given up, yes. The stats are what they are. They didn't create turnovers and they failed to get off the field in many key moments in games. Of course they didn't have a lot of help from the offense in the last half of the season when Elliott was suspended and we couldn't run our ball control offense, which is how this team is constructed. The early injury to Lee caused problems as well. Barring injuries (and more boneheaded idiocy from players) I firmly believe the defense will be much improved this season.

I can tell you for certain that the Steelers sure as hell weren't the 5th best.

What the stats don't show is how often the qb held the ball too long, ran into a sack, or refused to move up in the open lane/pocket to throw. Against ATL Dak could've avoided more than half the sacks by taking advantage of that wide open lane
Good points

The primary issue was that Tyron missed a lot of snaps in 2017.

When Tyron not only was LT a disaster but it make Cooper worse at LG.

If there were rating per game I think it would be obvious.
Hope you're having an excellent day brother

Really terrible, considering the investment in the oline.

Tyron
Cooper
Fredbeard
Martin
Collins

That's 5 guys who were selected (or were going to be, counting Collins) in the 1st round. I understand Tyron Smith got hurt, but with that amount of resources, anything less than #1 is really bad. 16 is abysmal and is a colossal failure.

It's also nothing more than someone's opinion.

You know QB play and offensive playcalling plays a huge part in sacks given up as well? Oline can't block forever every play.

What does that have to do with the offensive line being a colossal failure? They weren't the best o-line in football. They weren't even close. They were middle of the road.

I don't think anyone views the 2017 Dallas Cowboys offensive line as a top 10 unit.

The 2017 Oline had to replace two starters and was without the best LT in the league part of the season and he was hampered by injuries all year when he did play. But I guess none of that should be taken into account.

Excuses. The Eagles didn't give up 8 sacks in a single game when they lost Peters. The offensive line was a turnstile.

Please re-read what I said. If you want to as well think about our offensive issues when Romo was here. Now that he's gone add those same issues to our new inconsistent QB. Think about a drop in production from our receivers as well, all in one year. I know where the OL is rated, that does not accurately or fairly criticize them.

You really didn't answer the question.

Were the Cowboys the 8th best defense in football? Not the 8th best in giving up yards. Were they 8th best defense, overall, in the NFL?

In fairness, they gave up 8 sacks in that game because of one OL, not the entire OL.

What that says is that the Eagles simply had a better backup LT than we did.

If Williams was such a stud why did he fall until the second round? That means most teams had two shots at him. What did they see?
He may not be the all pro/ pro bowl player Tyron Zach and Fred are but he has potential to be a really good player maybe pro bowl player. Especially sandwiched between Tyron and Fred

Anyone who argues this was the 8th ranked defense in the NFL makes me chuckle.

They were 8th in yards allowed. Hardly the measure that best dictates defensive prowess.

Since the ultimate objective of defense is to prevent the opponents from scoring, one could reasonably argue that 'Points Allowed' would be the better indicator of defensive success. In which case the Cowboys finished tied with Seattle at 13TH.

The cowboys oline has been vastly overrated by the fans and media since 2014.

Middle of the pack in pass protection.. sounds about right.

And when you look at the totality of available stats, it's pretty clear this defense is pretty much middle of the road.
