Cowboys overall performance over the last decade

When you have a soft schedule during the regular season, it shows in the playoffs.

Then you have a strong regular season and we don't make the playoffs.

Fans choose to see and believe what they want.

Your record in the regular season is meaningless.
How else do you make the playoffs?

The team winning percentage in the regular season doesn't seem to be a great indicator to overall sucess
To me it's only a way to get into the playoffs. It's a "new season" from there. The only weak team i can recall in these ten years was bucs. 8-9...crazy them getting in but they won their division. I stand by my opinion that game gets an asterisk.

Most of the weak teams we beat in regular season don't make playoffs and it shows.

This is what I found on star muse.com

Roger Staubach .718
Danny White .669
Dak Prescott .632
Tony Romo .590
Troy Aikman .570
I think his list includes playoff games. I’ve also seen Hurts’ record as better than that so that must be the case

I have not read through all the posts yet.
But this will be overlooked.
2015 all 4 teams had down years and Cousins won the NFCE. 2020 again all 4 teams were bad and a losing team won the NFCE. Dallas would have definitely made the playoffs both those years.

2024 Dak was 3-5 before he got injured and an 11-6 team was the 7th seed. You would have had to have gone 9-0 to finish the season to make the playoffs as the third NFCE team

The Cowboys have been a different team in the regular season than in the playoffs. The team tends to peak about mid season then begins to fade the second half of the season. We’re still able to win games but the wins start to become ugly. By the time December arrives the cracks are starting to show and we limp into the playoffs. We’re never playing our best football when the playoffs arrive.
We also have a tendency to run into the “hot” team or the nemesis team going into the playoffs as well. SF a couple of times and GB just recently.

You are kidding right?

You are the lead cheerleader of the cherry picking society.

It's completely fine to disect stats etc. Doing so allows us to be objective and assess accurately. It's not called cherry picking, it calculating using median v mean to improve accuracy etc.

If you earned $50,000 per year are you wealthy? Instant answer is 'no way". Well......you would be if you lived in India due to their living costs.

So with that in mind, removing the 2 "Indian" teams that have been putrid for years does actually paint a more accurate picture of our performance.
Along same lines as removing a runningbacks longest run fron the game to get a better idea of how youe defense played the run.

If the other teams running back ran 18 times for 144 yards, but had a 51 yard banger and a 37 yard banger...how do you judge your overall run defense?

144 yards they gave up...

Or, 16 runs and the ball carrier only accumulated 56 yards?

Why couldn't we ever be the "Hot team" in the playoffs?

The Bills and Ravens have been having this same issue as well for the last decade....darlings of the regular season and not much farther

I think (I could be wrong) that its believed that as long as Jerry stays relevant during and after the season, winning a superbowl at the cost of perhaps having a couple of bad years afterwards, makes him (Jerry) content with having a "good season" (defined by having a winning record) as long as his cowboys are still the most valuable NFL sports franchise in the world.

To Jerry, I honestly believe that being the worlds most valuable sports franchise is more important than winning a superbowl. The irony is with Jimmy's help winning those super bowls helped enable that current reality of being the most valuable sports franchise in the world.

After Jerry's "all in" comment, I suspect as he gets even older he's going to make even more dumber comments, but he will still be in power of his company, and as long as they are making money, who cares?
He's already won 3 Super Bowls.

Trophies don't buy you a yacht.

Unfortunately Jerry won 3 Super Bowls immediately after taking ownership. Not just 1...but 3 in 4 years.

He's lived the Sports Rock Star life already as he's won 3 trophies AND his early 90s teams are considered one of best teams ever.

He's reached the top...can't go any higher. It's now about being the best provider for his family and their families and then their families...and that's creating as much wealth as possible.

The unfortunate part is that their business model is against the spirit of sport, and Cowboys fans are left in frustration year after year.

Well said.

And even though Jerry is a great businessman who made this organization even more financially sound, it needs to be emphasized- he bought “America’s Team” not the browns.

Before anyone in football had heard the name Jerry Jones, the Cowboys had already won 20 playoff games and appeared in 5 of the NFL’s first 13 SBs.
In other words when he bought the team it also included a very large and loyal fan base.

Best argument I've heard that really gets to the root of the Jerry problem and if his business model is ethical or not

Every business owner would prefer buying a business with a built in customer base...

But, exploiting that customer base that is tied to Cowboys and wanting the Cowboys to win, is so against the spirit of sport and human spirit.

Hea just monetized a sport and left fans in the dust because he found a model that makes the most money by way of early playoff exits.

Fans want their team to win

Jerry wants drama from failing in playoffs

Pretty sad deal

That sir, is better well said than my comment! ;)

We all need luck (or being blessed) in our lives. Jerry bought "America's Team", and IMHO it was Jimmy who made the franchise into the most valuable sports franchise in the world bringing "America's Team" back to prominence.

Speaking as a man who isn't a billionaire, how much money can you afford to lose until you're the NFL world champions?

Last I looked and my numbers could be wrong, but the last super bowl champions were ranked #9 as the most valuable team in the NFL. The Kansas City Chiefs were ranked at #18. When you think about the fact that there are 1,000 million dollars in a billion, it kind of puts things into perspective when the salary cap is 280 million dollars per year, it puts things into perspective of the NFL teams overhead. The irony is football teams rarely pay for their stadiums outright because cities don't want to lose the potential business.

Ironically enough, the Cleveland browns are only ranked 22nd around 6 billion, 5 billion behind the #1 cowboys.

Teams can afford the money, the question is how much do they want to spend to win? With Jerry, as long as he spends enough to stay relevant, he's good.

It is even debatable that he is a good business man.

Texas has been the fastest growing state over the last 30 years. It would be difficult to not have success in that environment, especially in monopoly of a league with 32 teams.(what team has lost value?)

A good Business man would be smart enough to hire a real GM. A good Business man, would sign his players on time, if not early, not just to save money, but to protect his employees from risking injury without a new contract. A good Business man is always learning and trying to improve.

None of this describes Jerry Jones.

The performance over the last decade is enough ..... for Jerry, not for fans: It came with some big wins along the way. More importantly to ol' Jerry, it came with drama and buzz and hype and media attention. And more importantly still to him, it made him truckloads of money.

Would the guy love to win another Super Bowl? Of course, just like every team owner. But will the guy move heaven and earth and do anything that might slightly disrupt his steady-eddie gravy train of money and attention to get that Super Bowl? No, he will not. He won't take big risks like the Eagles or other teams to truly go for it all. He won't take a backseat to sharper football minds to go for it all.

So this performance of the last decade ... yeah, it reflects everything Jerry Jones is really about and stands for beyond the half-baked bluster that comes out of his mouth.

Jerry turned a football franchise into a year round sports media circus...to maximize profit.

He knows what buttons to push year round to cause drama to drive media profits.

Common Ingredients are:

1) drag out contracts

2) say and do weird things in front of cameras (helicopter landing at practice, BLOCKCHAINCOM instead of Blockchain.com)

3) undermine coaches

But most importantly, because it causes the most media drama...

4) early playoff exits

It's aways something, year round....hope, drama, hope, drama, hope, drama

I don't know if Jerry could have made this work without the help of the scouting department actually putting good players on the field the past 15 years. He has to have hope on the field or his business model crumbles. If there was no hope, the money slows down quite a bit.

Jerry needs a good team to crash in the playoffs to make the most money he possibly can...and that's his aim.

There's no doubt in my mind that Jerry could win a couple more Super Bowls if he wanted to. Guarantee he has the refs in his pocket in the playoffs to ensure his business model comes to fruition.

The only way I’d feel worse about my fandom is if I were a Bills fan.
Of course, then I’d still have Josh Allen as my WB instead of Dak, so maybe not.

How have the Cowboys performed over the last decade (from 2015-24) in some of the most important measurements like regular season wins, playoff appearances, and playoff wins?

Here’s how we measured up in the last decade from 2015-2024:
  • Regular season wins and losses: 93-71 (.567)
  • Won the NFC East 4 times: 2016, 2018, 2021, and 2023.
  • Playoff appearances: 5 times: 2016, 2018, 2021, 2022, 2023.
  • Did not qualify for the playoffs: 5 times: 2015, 2017, 2019, 2020, 2024
  • Playoff record last decade: 2-5 : Wins in WC round, 2018 and 2022, losses in WC or divisional round 2016, 2018, 2021, 2022, 2023. (.285)
Overall, we won about 56% of our regular season games and 29% of our playoff games. We qualified for the playoffs 50% of the time, and won the division 40% of the time. We never earned the right in the playoffs to be one of the best two teams in the conference.

When I look at the Cowboys over the last decade I see a team that is above average in the regular season, makes the playoffs about 50% of the time and does not perform well in the playoffs. We have been a top 6-8 team in the league at times but not better than that.

Anything else?
...so basically, Bullet. We've been average over the last ten yrs. Which is not bad, but it's a letdown to champion organization.
