It would be dumb for them not too. Gives them negotiation power against Dak. They got to see up close in practice if he has potential. He is really young. Might as well train him for that #1 or 2 spot. He is cheap.
yes.

I think Dak knows his time is running out.

Short of a Super Bowl, he's gonna get cut next Spring.

There's 60+ million in dead cap they have to work on.

btw, Cooper's deal is dirt cheap. He's UFA after 2024. They can always extend him again. He's not going anywhere.

This thing is setup for a QB change.

Lance is 15 mill in cap. UFA after 2024.

Darnold is on a 1 yr 5 mill contract. UFA after 2023.

49ers free up a lot of cap.

I'd guess Dallas will want a 4yr 40-50 mill deal for Lance.

Pretty much seals Dak's fate with the team.

Its gonna happen.
They actually lost cap space on that trade. Not much but again they would have lost 0 keeping him and cutting Darnold.

They traded 3 1s and after 1.5 games played realized the last pick in the draft should start. They then realized one of the worst QBs in football would be a better backup. Considering how often injuries to QB have hurt them, they still preferred Darnold.

4 yr 40-50 M is way too much for a backup QB

First we get Dak the project.
Now we get Trey the project.
For the most important position on a team...

I don't think Jerruh views him as a backup.

I think he just views him as a starter....a starter that never sees the field. 50 million is a BARGAIN for that!

In Jerruh we Trust.
Lance is a Free Agent after 2024. If he is good enough to start for the Cowboys he will get 50M per or enter free agency..

I think this is more about $$$.

Dak's had his chances. no Pro Bowls since 2018 and his playoff record stinks.

At some time this offseason, likely in Feb-Mar, a decision will be made.

If this was the case they would simply take the fifth year option (2025) in Lance's deal and pay him like the starting QB you think he will be. And they aren't doing that.

I have a feeling this forum is going to explode when the Cowboys extend Dak again. Because- if only for cap relief- they have no alternative.
Honestly if Dak’s extended fine if not fine but the folks that have made this forum difficult on a daily basis with their ire for the QB

Well let’s just say it will make my day seeing the reaction to the extension

I mean I have ire for the GM but don’t feel the need to interject it in every thread

Spotrac has our 2024 cap at negative 11 million.

That’s with Lael finally being off the books. (8.1 million in dead cap for 2023.)

We still have Zeke for 2024 at 6 mill.

Unless they extend Dak or restructure again, there is no way they pay him 61 million in 2024.

It’s all about the cash.

I think that's right. I mean really there are only 3 possibilities here....

1) Lance is leverage in Dak negotiations
2) Lance is who they hope can take over
3) They really don't have a plan

To me none of those possibilities are off the table either.
I like # 3

lance has done a good job for cowboys so far ! S0 well worth 25 mil !:omg:
25 mil for a unproven bkup qb is about par for jerry lol. but he was a 1st round pick !! so worth it!
But so was johnny manziel.

I think it is odd so many first rd picks keep getting chances , then fail again and again .

It's more about how they're thumbing their noses at fans, and riding Dak into the sunset, in spite of their behest. It's also to give them leverage, because they want to also sign Parsons to a large deal, and Lamb has earned it too.

Dak is UFA after 2024.

Unless they extend him with a new deal. Unlikely now because of Lance.

They can save cap $$$ if they make him a June 2024 cut.
Dak is due $59 mil next year. No way Jerry's gonna eat that money in a single year. He's going to extend him for a decade or more and spread the money out.

Did a little research.
30 SBs have been won with QBs chosen in the first rd.
Of those that are not First Rd Choices you have these:
Tom Brady
Joe Montana
Roger Staubach
Bart Starr
Who all won multiple SBs (Total of 15 wins there)
To be fair, Roger would have been a first round pick if he didn't have his Navy commitment.
