@AdamSchefter: Cowboys plan to sign S Will Allen, who started eight games last year for Steelers.

I'm fine with this IF we can a starter at safety in the draft.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure we would be bringing him in for depth, not to start. I can still see us taking Vaccaro at 18 or another safety in round 2.

Good. Worst thing you can do is spend money in free agency on average players. You should ideally find most of your average starters through draft picks and only pay for super stars and vet min type players.

You pay Michael Huff and you make Matt Johnson irrelevant and any potential safety draft pick irrelevant.

Championship! Sorry I had to do this.

Anyway, I'm fine with beinging him I'm for depth. Can't hurt.

I expect Allen is getting the job because we want more of a depth guy. I like Huff but expect he's looking for a bigger deal. Also, Allen is a guy who will play ST whereas Huff maybe not so much.

Then he will fit in perfectly.

You are a prime candidate for our secondary if you cant catch or stay healthy, what is the harm in signing another mediocre safety?

Yep
Cheaper
ST Guy
Coaches know him
Not a penciled in starter so not a progress stopper
Not a long term solution
Does not preclude them from drafting a Safety in the first 3 rounds.

IMO Huff was never a real option as I imagine he wanted more money and stability than the cowboys were willing to give.

and really, if you are signing a 30 year old player. You want the guy who is comes in willing to just do whatever he can to stay in the league. Huff is the sort of player that doesn't give you anything unless he's the starter

I'm doubting this. Allen was the Steelers Safety last season and now he's gone. That probably means that the Steelers are looking at Safeties in the Draft. Tomlin was scouting Vaccaro at the Combine and then yesterday, Tomlin flew to Texas to scout Vaccaro again during his Pro Day. Steelers pick 17th so if we are at 18, I'm thinking there's a pretty good chance that he gets taken a spot before us.

Really starting to look like that's where they might be leaning.

I was thinking the same thing. If they want Vaccaro, they would need to trade up to 16 (Rams) to get him. By getting Allen, they maybe planning on not being able to get Vaccaro.
