I was thinking the same thing. If they want Vaccaro, they would need to trade up to 16 (Rams) to get him. By getting Allen, they maybe planning on not being able to get Vaccaro.

I can't imagine Dallas moving up in the first round again this year, if anything I see a move backwards not foward.

I think SF will trade up for him. They got alot of ammo!

Church is going to start. He can very easily get injured.

Matt Johnson they seem to be high on but I don't think he starts but if he did he could very easily get injured.

Even if they draft a guy like Swearinger or Rambo, both of the guys mentioned above could get hurt.

Will Allen can start for 4-8 games without being a chew toy out in the backfield. So it's a good signing if it is much less than Huff's contract.

Vaccarro is not much better than Cyprien, Reid, Swearinger or Rambo IMHO and is not the way to go in round 1. We are in a position to be where a d-line or o-line stud falls or 1 of 2 blue chip guards will be available.

Jerry may be able to sell some Vaccarro jerseys and that's the only reason we should go there 1st round. The wrong reason.

Yep
Cheaper
ST Guy
Coaches know him
Not a penciled in starter so not a progress stopper
Not a long term solution
Does not preclude them from drafting a Safety in the first 3 rounds.

IMO Huff was never a real option as I imagine he wanted more money and stability than the cowboys were willing to give.

You can say that about any player.

Romo can very easily get injured. Therefore we need to draft (fill in whatever your favorite QB is here).

See. Meaningless argument.

Do you know how much we signed him for??
Huff signed for 3 years $6 million

I liked Huff because of his name and profile. If people like Kiffin think Allen is the better fit, I'm all for it. I just wanted to get some of these holes filled while the bargains were happening.

I'm doubting this. Allen was the Steelers Safety last season and now he's gone. That probably means that the Steelers are looking at Safeties in the Draft. Tomlin was scouting Vaccaro at the Combine and then yesterday, Tomlin flew to Texas to scout Vaccaro again during his Pro Day. Steelers pick 17th so if we are at 18, I'm thinking there's a pretty good chance that he gets taken a spot before us.

Really starting to look like that's where they might be leaning.

nice post! i wasn't aware of this. very interesting stuff here.

I take this as a "placeholder" signing like Livings and Bernadeau - a guy capable of starting until the younger guys take over but one that isn't paid enough to worry if he ends up as a backup. I take this as Dallas being zeroed in on Vaccaro in the draft.

Totally OT, but my best friend knew Allen in the past and said he is a great guy. So that is a positive.

I don't have a problem with Will Allen getting picked up. Depth at the very least for this transaction who has experience in Kiffen's defense...

I don't think Allen is the long term answer here but I don't see how this is a bad move especially knowning Kiffen's Defense.

Let's hope so. Vaccaro at 18 is pretty much my worst case scenario.

Yes, landing a day one starter at our position of greatest need is certainly a "worst case scenario."

Well Safety is not our biggest need. when i watch the 2012 Dallas cowboys i see an OL that failed to protect Romo consistently, failed to run block for anything more than a 2 yard gain...I also saw a DL that got zero push, couldn't collaspe a pocket, and got zero pressure on the QB.

Safety is not the greatest need. The greatest need is line play. Safety is a flash pick, sexy pick that makes everyone think championship, but it will only get us 8-8 and wanting to fire a very good coach.

I don't think the signing was for him to be a starter. Yes, he will be given the chance but I found the following on him.

Allen was the Buccaneers' special teams captain in 2008. Allen was the first alternate for NFC Special Teams for the 2009 Pro Bowl.

I think he's here more for depth and ST.

Define what you mean by "need." At least we have the bodies to fill out a two-deep at the line. Besides, fixing the line won't be accomplished by picking a first round guard, whereas Kenny V. would immediately solidify our defensive backfield.
