What's crazy is that we have been pretty fiscally responsible for close to 5 years now.

The fact that we are not in great shape and still being saddled by unfavorable contracts really speaks to how terribly we used to manage salaries.

At least we're heading in the right direction, though.

Except we still tend to overpay some of our own guys. Tyrone Crawford seems to be a serious misjudgement. I think Barry Church was incredibly overpaid.

Good point. Didn't think of Crawford. One of the most premature big contacts they have ever given.

Barry Church had a contract extension of 4 years, 12.4 million.
Sure, this past year his cap hit was 4.75m.

Here's a list of the cap hits for Safeties around the league: https://overthecap.com/position/safety/

What would of been fair for an average starting safety that had some strengths and liabilities?

Agreement on Crawford though.

You have to understand that in my opinion, Barry Church is awful and paying him $4 is overpaying him.

Ultimately, with relatively few resources to utilize, unless they can capture lightning in a bottle again this offseason and uncover a midround gem like Dak Prescott at one of their positions of need, the Cowboys may look a lot like they did last year.

So, 13-3? I can live with that.

32. Dallas Cowboys
Salary Cap Space: $6,528,915 (31st)

Draft Pick Capital: Seven picks valued at 1,138.3 points (29th)

The Cowboys will be in better shape when they unload Tony Romo’s deal(which will save them about $5.1 million against the cap), but that doesn’t get them to where they need to be in order to truly improve their roster through free agency. With a number of holes to fill on the defense, especially at defensive back, the Cowboys can’t turn to the draft for high-value-pick help either; they hold seven picks for a total value of 29th leaguewide. What is really pathetic is that everyone looks at Romo's contract as an albatross, and realistically, at $14 million, there are a ton of QBs making more than him. Cousins will be paid $24 million next year alone.

Improvement from within and maybe some moderate impact next year from rookies.

There's your offseason.

Oh...And our offensive line will take a step back losing Leary and retaining Free.

I personally think we would be better off cutting Free and playing Green at right tackle. We would save $5million and I would keep Leary.

I agree that Crawford is most likely overpaid. I thin kit was a calculated risk that didn't turn out all that great (at least so far). But hindsight is 20/20. I agree that we way over value the Barry Church type of players. You can't pay average players a premium on an ongoing basis and stay within the cap for the long haul.

still takes cap room.

Why "throw" money at mediocre players. Upgrade.

As Stephen said, we are going to try and sign some of our own players and fill in holes with bargain FA's.
The draft is where they will vision the future if any such exists. Same game plan as last year. If you are
expecting different then, you are setting yourself up for extreme disappointment.

Restructuring Dez will add about $10 million to that number. Trading/releasing Romo will add $5.1 million.

I just want the defense to get better,

Staying the same (re-signing mediocre players) isn't getting better. It's simply maintaining.

Saying we are going to get better through the draft is childlike thinking. 32 teams participate in the draft. They will all attempt to get better through the draft. Football is competition.

They have only cleared enough to be about 6mil under the cap. They won't clear more until they are ready to sign some deals.
They most likely will sign a couple of mid-level deals with defensive players just like last year in the 2nd or 3rd week of FA. Stephen
is running the finances now and he's not breaking the bank for anyone. You may think it's childlike but, that's just the way the
Cowboys are going to roll. If you're looking for splash check out Cleveland's or Jacksonville's websites.

Amazing how the Super Bowl champs have $60M available to them, and have next to nothing.
Pfft. We could snap our fingers and create that kind of room. And stuff.
But it also avoided a bidding war. You have to look at both sides of it.
I cannot recall the last time Dallas had a bidding war against any team besides themselves. We must be pretty good at avoiding them.
