Cowboys re-sign Danny McCray

You like anybody who wears a star, just stop.

McCray sucks, deal with it

Wow. What a totally uninformed comment.

Why don't you actually get some information before making silly claims?

So paying McCray about $100,000 per special team tackle is alright with some of you? You don't pay a special team player that much money. You don't tender him, and after no other team makes him an offer, you offer him a vet minimum salary. I seriously doubt that any other team would sign him to anything near $1.3 million.

You can't have a steak on every plate, when you find a good special teamer, you play him until he is a free agent then go out and find his cheap replacement.

I know its not guaranteed until the season starts, but there is no reason to use up $1.3 million of your cap on a special team player.

If they were dead-set on keeping McCray they would have signed him to a contract for more then 1 year. Offering him the non-guaranteed tender is basically saying we'll take him to training camp for free (no guaranteed money) and see what happens at the position.

He's another body for camp. No assurance he makes the team.

Good to see all the crying about it though.

Wow!

What are you trying to do here?

Justify paying a special teams tackler $1.3 million, or making me feel even worse by bringing up the debacle of 2009?

Love your rampages, bro.

Just think of how mad you get when we give up 50 yard kick returns.

We have no depth at safety. Right now he is 4th behind Church, Allen, and Johnson. Even if we bring in another quality safety he would be fifth and we would still want him.

I'm, disgusted by the attention the Cowboys have put towards the safety position the last several years. It sucked watching McCray fail repeatedly at covering the deep halves and thirds.

He has value as a nickelback and special teams caster. He is our best ST teams player.

Is the contract even guaranteed?

After you my friend...after you

So if this pile jumper doesn't get him, nobody will? Good to know.

Sad, but good to know.

Sorry but I think Eric Frampton made a few plays, and also didn't embarrass himself at safety either.

I honestly don't know the full details of the contract being guaranteed or not.

But I would assume that if he gets hurt at any point, he gets his money.

And I would have to wonder why any player would sign a deal that locks in his rights to a team, but guarantees him absolutely no money if he is released at any point.

Sorry but I do not see any value as a nickel back.

I see a player who is a complete liability on defense, in fact, one who hurts his own teammates.

If by this point, he hasn't shown that he can play safety at all (and he hasn't), it's time to go looking for a replacement who may have some potential to be a backup if needed.

Let's face it, other than a few special teams plays, none of us wants this guy anywhere near the field otherwise.

For me, special teamers should have some value in some other area unless they're snapping, kicking, or punting.

McCray has clearly shown me that he absolutely does not.

105 now 106 posts about a 2nd team player who plays special teams? SMH I have no words for the stupidity of this....

Who cares? He may or may not be on the team at the beginning of the season.

The overreaction in this thread is off the charts.

Don't rain on a perfectly good rueage thread like this.

We can even say for the sake of argument that they have enough money.

Then their thinking is that McCray is worth $1.3 million to make special teams tackles while Winston is not worth $3 million a year to start at right tackle and give up just 3 sacks?

Can you see some flawed logic happening here?

well, one guy has nothing at all to do with the other. the fact we have'nt signed winston has nothing to do with mccray and probably nothing to do with the 3 mil a year
more likeley they would rather wait for the draft and see if they can get a young guy, if not winston will still be there. it's not like this super star you refer to has teams beating down his door. as for mcray being a complete bum, you wanta guess who was second on the team in tackles last year?
he is not a starter quality player but he is a nice backup who is a very good special teams player

Wanta guess who was rated as the league's worst safety last year?

That's the reason he had so many tackles, because he was the targeted asset link.

The reason he had so many tackles might be due to our injury situation and the fact that forced him onto the field when he otherwise wouldn't have been.

And shouldn't have been.

But hey, let's give $1.3 million to a guy we pray doesn't have to see the field!

Only in Dallas!

When did a 1 year/1.3M non guaranteed contract become a large contract? The minimum for a 4 year player is $715,000 so he's getting double the minimum because he's the special teams captain. He'll get this money if it turns out that we need his experience and leadership on special teams.

About the same time that $3million for a huge upgrade at right tackle became too expensive.

Other than snapper, kicker, and return man, your ST needs to be composed of backups and role players that ALSO contribute to special teams. You don't sign a guy whose only productive role is on special teams who isn't snapping, kicking, or returning. And you sure don't give him $1.3 million - for that, you better be able to come in and produce short term in a game.

Back in the Super Bowl years, Jimmy always had some special teams only players on the roster. I can't remember his name, but there was this one white linebacker that never played a snap on defense but was a maniac on special teams.
