Back in the Super Bowl years, Jimmy always had some special teams only players on the roster. I can't remember his name, but there was this one white linebacker that never played a snap on defense but was a maniac on special teams.

May have been Matt Vanderbeak (sp?)

But I doubt any of them were ever paid $1.3 million

Bates and Kenny Gant were both at least capable defenders.

Other than snapper, kicker, and return man, your ST needs to be composed of backups and role players that ALSO contribute to special teams. You don't sign a guy whose only productive role is on special teams who isn't snapping, kicking, or returning. And you sure don't give him $1.3 million - for that, you better be able to come in and produce short term in a game.

A lot of hate for McCray. Couple of years ago, the consensus was that he was a valuable member of the bottom part of the roster. I don't blame the guy for ending up in a position he wasn't ready to order, and I don't mind resigning a devil you know to compete in camp.

Didn't think his resigning would warrant this many pages, wow.

We haven't signed Winston because we do not yet know what we are going to do with Free. We have not signed Winston because we do not yet know how the draft will play out in regards to OT. We have not signed Winston just as every other team in the league has not signed him. He's not that great. He's better than Free was last year. But he's no world beater and locking him in NOW ties our hands in regards to what we can do in the draft.

Waiting keeps our options OPEN. We are waiting until after the draft. Having it be 6 days before the the draft is no different than it being 3 days before the draft or 2 months before the draft.

Some people wake up each morning a flip out when something hasn't been done. If the team is waiting for an event to pass, getting closer to that event doesn't change things. Stephen Jones isn't going to suddenly get itchy and drop his plan to WAIT for no reason.

Winston is out there. Clabo is out there. Their agents know EVERY team is waiting until after the draft for them because neither are make or break players. Worrying that there will be a sudden bidding war is just silly.

I'm late to the party but I'm a little confused as to why Winston is still on the market. He's a solid player that's been cut from two teams in the last two years.

Winston said he's only asking for $3-4 million but has had interest from MIA, PHI, JAX, DAL, and SD but no one wants to fess up the $3-4 million for him?

Lets look at available cap space for those teams interested:

MIA = $8,263,667.00

PHI = $23,134,806.00

JAX = $27,000,082.00

DAL = $4,394,505.00

SD = $5,798,130.00

I'm even more confused as to why 5 teams with more than enough cap space to afford that number still haven't struck a deal with him.

After looking at the 2013 OT draft class maybe teams are waiting for the draft to play out because this has a pretty deep OT class with 8 guys that are slotted to go in rounds 1-2.

That's probably the case.

I agree with Stash. McCray is not a special enough player to be worth a RFA tender as a special teamer and is a very marginal backup player in the secondary.

I would not have tendered him but offered him a vet min salary to compete for a spot.

I know some think we are making mountains over mole hills but it is this pervasive behaviour of over-valuing our vets that makes it hard for us to get any kind of vet bargains ever for our players. The only way we ever get one is no one is interested in our players at all. For two years we haven't been able to negotiate an extension for Spencer and have franchised him in back-to-back years for a 29 year old edge rusher with one double digit sack year.

We should be looking to upgrade McCray's spot more than we should be trying to ensure we hang onto a very marginal NFL player, IMO. I agree with others who wonder why Frampton hasn't been pursued when he is also a good special teamer but a much, much better Safety.

In the end, it isn't the end of the world but it continues to make me convinced that this FO doesn't do a good job of getting maximal efficiency from our available cap space. This lack of cap space has hamstrung us from signing one of the league's better OGs over the last couple of years as a stopgap for our deplorable interior OL that is short on quality and also short on developmental prospects currently.

Part of the problem here is none of us know exactly how highly the FO thinks of Jeremy Parnell and to a lesser extent Darrion Weems. They may be set with Parnell as the starter and are just looking for a vet OT to play the swing Tackle position and compete against Weems and a draft a pick. If that is the case it is understandable that they may not wish to break the bank on Winston.

I actually feel that OG is a much bigger need than Tackle or Center which are typically much harder holes to fill. I still am really hoping we sign Brandon Moore before the draft lest some team that misses on him start a bidding war that we cannot win.

Agreed. I think if they sign Winston right at this moment then they will pass on a possible OT draft pick. One of the things Garrett has done in shaping the roster is to go younger whenever possible. I'm not opposed to signing Winston but if the opportunity is there to draft an OT I'd rather use the draft.

I'm humored by people that are upset because we didn't sign FA "X" but are also the same ones that complain that this team is poorly built because we built via FA rather than the draft.

I think the interior of the line needs help. I like Costa but the back issue is worrisome. Nate Livings dropped off towards the end of the year and Bernadeau was very inconsistent the whole year whether it was injury or not.

I think the team likes Clabo more than they like Winston. And I think they need to wait until after the draft to see if his number comes down. If Clabo goes elsewhere or wants too much money, they'll probably see which vet between Free or Winston they can get most affordably if either player will compete for a starting spot. Otherwise, give the shot at the job to Parnell and find add a veteran swing tackle somewhere affordably.

At OG, I have to think Moore's a likely candidate. And DAL makes the most sense for him, too. That one, I think we're just waiting to see what direction the draft goes, but I imagine we've got the framework for a starting OG contract ballparked already. I'm not sure how the dynamic works, but coupled with us not filing the revisions to Livings deal yet, it just makes too much sense to not have there be some sort of contingency plan in place involving that player.

Re: the backup S position...I agree that it's a lot to commit to a ST ace. If it's a case of giving Rich Bisacia someone he thinks he really wants on the ST roster, it's not the end of the world, and I don't think it's a particular sign of business as usual to spring an extra $500k of cap room for a player they think might make a difference on Teams for them next season. Assuming, of course, he actually makes it onto the roster.

I'm leary only because he graded out near the top of the league not too long ago now people aren't jumping all over him. So what's the problem.

I agree they should wait until after the draft. They can get a vet FA to shore up what they need then. They actually have until the end of TC to acquire somebody although you'd like someone new to the system to get some reps.
