***Cowboys released Rodney Hannah *Merged***

I really liked him last year and this year as well but he's just unlucky in that the depth chart at TE is too deep on the Cowboys. I have a feeling they probably released him at his request though since he knew it was unlikely he would make the team. This gives him a chance to latch on with another team that may have a need at TE.

class move by our Cowboys to give him a chance to catch on with another team.

I think that the Cowboys are pretty fair with the players they know they are not keeping. Instead of holding onto these guys to the bitter end, they let these guys go and give them a chance to pick up on another team.

I think it's a mistake. Cut a serviceable TE with the team dependent on two TE sets with two preseason games left to play? If someone gets hurt, now we'll be scrambling.

Instead, they should be letting Hannah get two more games of film on his resume, play him significant reps and just let him know he just happens to be the odd-man out at a pivotal position. Work the phones on his behalf when you do cut him if you feel like doing him a favor, but he's taking up a valuable spot on the roster, and we don't have an obligation to give him a running start at the job market.

Could not agree more. If Phillips (or a starter) goes down, not crazy about the skinny tall kid from the Chargers. Hannah is a much better blocker than that guy.

They really haven't used the two TE set in the preseason and when they have they run out of it. They certainly didnt use it in the second halves of these games.

Idgit, we're only gonna keep three, and we still have four on the roster-- Witten, Bennett, Phillips and Chandler... and what's the point of keeping a player who wants to be released??

Just because there is always some imaginary trade value he might have, of course. Teams always unload picks or players for fourth string players or haven't you noticed?

The simple fact is, he would be released. One way or the other. And judging by the fact he hasn't found a home yet, I'd say that trade scenario was not feasible.

Oh yeah, that's right... I forgot that for a second...

My bad...

Don't know our scrubs and cast offs are always worth a 1st round pick? :laugh2:

Was he behind Chandler, too? If he's our 4th TE, we should keep him through preseason when we're sure we don't need him for the regular season. That's the whole reason we've been paying him to develop until now.

If he's behind Chandler and in the 5th spot, then that's sufficient insurance and I'd agree that letting him go is exceedingly unlikely to hurt the team and that we should have granted his request.

Obviously, trade value for a player like Rodney Hannah shouldn't enter into anybody's thought process, so I'm not sure what weird tree Alexander is barking up.

Your's, when you start talking about "working the phones". I assumed that meant trade value. I see that you then said on his behalf, but since when do teams waste time calling other team's on a player's behalf, especially when they asked out to begin with?

He was buried, he asked to be gone and that's really all there is to it. If he doesn't want to be here, why bother wasting time listening to the whining from a player you know won't be around?

Ah I see what conclusion you leapt to now. No, I was talking about position coaches (or other offensive coaches) spreading the word when the team lets go of a talented player who gets caught in a numbers game. Of course this happens all the time, whether its a prospective team doing diligence or the cutting team doing the player a favor because they like how he worked for them.

And he's not buried if he'd make the roster with one injury at the position. If Hannah's indeed behind Chandler, too, or if we'd go to the street for a number three if someone gets hurt, then, fine. But if he's 4th at the position and we have two games to play, we should be hanging on to him until we're sure we don't need him.

Of course Hannah is a talented guy and can block. Just like any business..when a new manager (coach) comes in they want to bring in their own guys. TE coach Garret recommends drafting phillips and then cuts him? i dont think so. Phillips will be a solid 3rd blocker
