Cowboys Secret Ingredient That Will Help Create A Super Bowl-Caliber Defense
https://www.bloggingtheboys.com/201...will-help-create-a-super-bowl-caliber-defense

...According to Team Rankings, the Cowboys have finished in the bottom 10 in yards allowed per passing attempt for six straight seasons, from 2010-2015. That’s something that wouldn’t come as as surprise to anyone. But then suddenly, last year the defense improved to 14th overall in this category. This stat doesn’t take into account how much a team has to throw on the Cowboys, but rather how well they do each time they try. This tells us that the Cowboys' pass defense improved substantially last year from the previous six years. This begs the question, why the improvement? The players involved have been relatively stable over the years. Brandon Carr, Orlando Scandrick, Morris Claiborne, and Barry Church have all been on the roster since 2012 with some of them missing time at various points due to injury. Did a switch get flipped last year and suddenly they played better?

Well, sort of. It’s not so much a switch as it was the people doing the flipping - the coaches. The Cowboys made two big coaching changes last year in their secondary. From 2012-2015, Jerome Henderson had been the team’s secondary coach. He left last year to become the Atlanta Falcons defensive passing game coordinator. You might remember the Falcons as the team that collapsed defensively as they allowed Tom Brady to throw for 466 yards on route to a historic Super Bowl comeback. Henderson is gone now and in his place is Joe Baker, who was promoted from the safeties coach to overseeing the entire secondary. And taking over Baker’s old job is Greg Jackson, who was the secondary coach in Michigan prior to coming to Dallas . But his experience in the secondary isn’t limited to college ball, as he’s enjoyed some nice success in the NFL. According to his bio from the Mothership...

Before accompanying Jim Harbaugh to Michigan, Jackson served on Harbaugh’s staff with the San Francisco 49ers (2011-14) as the assistant secondary coach. Over that span, the 49ers were second in points-per-game allowed (17.4), tied for second in interceptions (78) and third in total defense (310.2 yards-per-game) and pass breakups (350). In that same four-year span, members of Jackson’s secondary earned two All-Pro honors and five Pro Bowl selections, while Eric Reid became the first 49ers rookie safety to make the Pro Bowl when he was selected in 2013.

T
his is very promising for the Cowboys. A proven secondary coach is now part of the mix in Dallas. We can all talk up a specific player about how well they developed, but when you have multiple players like J.J. Wilcox and Jeff Heath all of sudden playing at career-high levels, it makes you wonder if something has changed within their style of play. The loss of Carr, Claiborne, Church, and even Wilcox may seem a little concerning considering how well they all performed last year, but that’s too much of a coincidence to just give all these players full credit. The coaches had something to do with it as well. If it’s true that the Baker/Jackson combo is now the winning ticket in Dallas, then you have to love their chances with so many young players with potential. Were the Cowboys really just that lucky with sixth-round pick Anthony Brown or is it possible that he was coached up to play at the level he played? Too many things went right for the Cowboys secondary to call it a fluke or chalk it up to chance that so many mediocre players elevated their game to a level we hadn’t seen before...

Cowboys Secret Ingredient That Will Help Create A Super Bowl-Caliber Defense????

That secret ingredient is called "TALENT", something this defense has been seriously DEVOID of over the last few years......does anyone really think that any of the players lost from this defense during the off season were really a loss for this team??.......When your offense controls the ball and time of possession during many games that limit other teams offenses from having control to expose your defense, then you end up skewed stats sometimes but make no mistake about it, this defense wasn't that good last year...

I think Cowboys hated to lose all them at the same time leaving them to fill several voids all at once. However I also feel the Cowboys were unwilling to pay out what each player got in FA. I agree none are corner stone players and each can be replaced I think the scary part is having to replace all in one season

Umm no. If you read this article it clearly points out the jump in performance with the same talent.

But you can go ahead a parrot your talking point I understand it. No matter what you think they all suck. Funny thing is they all got paid

But thats not what this article is about. Its about who is still with the organization Baker and Jackson. Because of them this young and talented secondary will perform at their best and reach thier potential earlier rather then later.

The main improvement I want to see in our defense is more takeaways. Turnovers are great for destroying an offense. In a drive, if an offense has made a lot of yards and good plays, etc., none of that is worth anything if the defense takes the ball away from them and even scores.

Exceptional secondary coaching is just what the doctor ordered to get these new rookies in the secondary off to a great start. It fine and dandy to have prime quality talent but coupled with the type of coaching to make them excel means everything. It's about time this team found the right combination of talent and coaching in the secondary to help take 'em to the top in the NFL. Good things are happening in Frisco these days.

Understand what your saying however I think the coaching staff got tired of watching Carr and Claiborne getting so comfortable whiffing tackles and giving up the sidelines between the 20's. also Wilcox getting lost in the deep middle. I also think the coaches wanted a change of attitude at the DB position and I hope we get to see it this year. By "attitude", many times Carr and Clai seemed to be playing not to get hurt and really weren't too concerned about making a play (tackle or fighting the WR at the LOS) knowing they were going to start each game no matter how well they played. Clai snapped out of that early this year with some aggressive play but again got set back by injury.
Just my opinion.

I had been calling for Henderson to be thrown out for years. Actually he and Baker. been saying this coaching and scheme is not right.
And when Henderson was replaced with Jackson last year, I said that was better than any draft pick.

They promoted Baker, and I wasn't so sure about that. But with Jackson on board I knew it would improve. Heck it couldn't get worse. LOL.
But turns out keeping Baker was ok. Now with all the changes and the players fitting the scheme better, let's see how they do. But may take a few years to see the true outcome.

I don't disagree but I still think they did not want to lose all those players within a season. If Cowboys could have kept a player on a 1 year deal I think they would have. Coaches still value experience and while I do agree all of those spots needed upgrades it is hard to upgrade all those position within a single season.

I imagine they wanted several of them (Church and Carr/Mo are the most likely candidates), but only so much. They just weren't going to overpay, period. The same way the handled the Demarco Murray situation.

Had they really been concerned about the DBs, they'd have seriously address it in the draft last year where they had chances to do so. Impending FA was one of the major reasons Ramsey made so much sense for them, for example. And just think how bare the cupboard would have looked this year had they not struck 'gold' with Anthony Brown. We'd have been heading into this draft with a hobbled Orlando Scandrick, Byron Jones, and Jeff Heath. Ouch.

Point is, you don't leave yourself that exposed accidentally. It had to be the case that they had numbers that they'd have paid for several of those players, and the market just beat what they were comfortable with. Carroll was the value replacement for Carr, and then we got fairly lucky (and they were fairly smart if this was the plan all along) that the DB draft was so unusually deep this year. Because right now, I expect our secondary will actually be improved over last years. And very inexpensively. That hardly seemed possible back in March.

No yourself.

Sure, it seems like we have quality coaches but quality coaches can't build elite defenses without talent. And this team has been void of difference making talent for a few years. The coaching staff, as good as you think they might be, have a ceiling that is dictated by talent. It's why Aaron Rodgers has picked us apart in our last two playoff losses. Because as much as we think the coaches are awesome, you still need talent.

It remains to be seen what kind of talent we have in the secondary. Hopefully we made a major upgrade in the draft (because we didn't upgrade the secondary in FA).

No talent? As if we all just arrived in country and got off the plane. This team has drafted very strong talent over the past two drafts...and on the side, constructed a top shelf offensive line.

I never said we had "no talent". I said we don't have enough talent on defense to field a top flight, championship caliber defense. Sure we have drafted better but we still have a lot of question marks on defense including the young guys some apparently are counting on to be instant hits.

So it remains to be seen if this team has high level defensive talent.

Hey, the team needs to first get to Training Camp. By the time the 'Turk' arrives, team projections will have been presented...but it's not nearly at this level:

You need both. Players need to be coached up and getting the best out of players is not easy to do. You draft the raw materials to make a product then you mold it.

I think the secret ingredient is to look for the ball when it is in the air. It will improve your chances of an int at 50%.

I know we have coaches and now we have talent.

This article is about the transition the secondary went through with same players and new coach .

This article brought to light something that may have gone unnoticed.

I for one didnt even realize we had said secret, let alone the value of said secret.

Good article

Exactly this gives me reason to have some optimisim knowing these kids are gonna be brought up right. Whuch will do wonders for thier confidence which dhould translate to performance.

It takes a certain personality type to excel in the secondary. If that confidence is exposed and shot to hell. Youll never get any production out of them and theyll be a waste of talent.

We are lucky to have this secret weapon
