Signed by Cowboys Cowboys sign C/G Joe Looney

The Cowboys and center/guard Joe Looney have agreed on a one-year deal, according to multiple sources. Looney has started 20 games in his four seasons with the Cowboys, including all 16 in 2018 when he took over for Travis Frederick. Looney can play multiple spots on the offensive line, which is a plus, and showed two years ago he can be a full-time player.

what’s up with all the one year deals???

His dancing in the locker room should have earned him a 5 year contract.

Great signing. Should have been a 3 year deal. Give that man security. He may be extended later.

I like it by why only 1 year?

1 year, $2.437 million. He was desginated a Veteran Salary Benefit player, so $1.25 million of salary is excluded from the cap for a charge of $1.187 million.

How does that work and can it apply to more than one player?

That’s a steal for Looney.

The Veteran Salary Benefit player, or more appropriately in this case a "4 year Qualifying Contract Player" is a player with 4 or more accrued seasons whose contract has expired after 4 or more continuous years on the same team. A team can designate 2 VSBs for a total cap credit of $2.5m. However, a player's exclusion cannot bring their salary below their minimum salary per the CBA. This exclusion was added as part of the new CBA agreement.
