If they're not willing to bring him up now? Under these circumstances? They're wasting everyone's time, his and theirs. Move on.

I don't understand this mind-set. You put players on the practice squad because you think they have potential or they might eventually be needed. They are the best players you have at the time. If you feel like you've got a chance of acquiring a better player, why wouldn't you do it? It doesn't mean you don't like the player that you've got, only that you think someone else might be better.

Olumba still gets the chance on the practice squad to improve his craft and try to compete for a roster spot next year. For all we know, he might even be needed this season if this player doesn't work out or the depth is further depleted. All this means is Dallas at the moment thinks this player might offer more. (Of course, it could also mean that while we have Olumba "under contract," we like this player and would rather have both in some capacity than just one of them.)

Olumba didn't just get here. He's been here at least two years now. If the team doesn't think he's good enough to bring up over someone else's practice squad guy, then what's the point in having him take up a practice squad spot? Use it for someone who might develop one day. Or someone who can develop at another position. Two years in and they don't have the confidence in Olumba to be that player. Move on. That's the mindset.

The Cowboys obviously felt that Olumba was the best corner we had beyond the ones that we kept on the 53. This is important for practice and depth purposes; that's why you keep him. They also likely did not feel that other players they could have kept were better than him, or had more potential. That's why you keep him.

Choosing to bring in a different player at his position doesn't change either of those things. The PS players are used for scout-team purposes while they are hopefully developing. Would you rather Dallas keep a lesser cornerback on the practice squad or a lesser player? Some players on other teams' practice squads are going to be better or more intriguing than what we've got, but our only real option would be to sign them to the 53.

Yeah it’s amazing that professional coaches who are around these guys daily don’t know as much as you do. Baffling

Why have a CB on your practice squad if when you have an injury— you poach a CB you know less about off someone else’s practice squad?

Does that make sense to you? Does it make sense to you that this coaching staff continued to start Brown when Lewis continued to make more plays on limited snaps?

Don’t act like this is rocket science. If you don’t value Olumba— fine. Cut him and use that PS space on another player. But to keep Olumba and promote a player from another team’s PS is strange. Even baffling

Chance to get a guy they like off of another team’s Practice squad. Had they moved Olumba up, they couldn’t have signed Burton off of Indy’s PS to be on the Dallas PS. This way they have both Burton and Olumba.

I suspect that McClay had flagged Burton as a guy they liked on another team’s PS and this was a chance to steal him from Indy. They probably view Olumba and Burton as about the same player, and since neither would play a lot, decided to take the chance to get a guy they liked.

I would agree in principle, but not all players on the practice squad are there to be in reserve for call up.

Some are just good scout players but aren't trustworthy enough or too specialized to fill a spot on the 53 depending on how it is constructed.

Look at Jameill Showers. He was around for years and there were plenty of times we had an injury and didn't call him up.

Not sure if Olumba falls into that same boat but that could be an explanation.

Would you consider Showers a success story?

Not saying he was. But they did use him in numerous ways (mobile scout QB for example). Some coaches value that. In Olumba's case, he never really threatened anyone on STs in preseason, so maybe that is his deal. He is big and aggressive, that can be for a good practice but not good enough to dress because of roster limits.

If those are his limitations, I'll continue to feel that they can make better use of the roster spot.
