I honestly like the Urban and Basham signings. They're both solid rotational guys. They won't make this an elite unit, but they are better than anything at DT and behind Lawrence/Gregory we had last year.

Then again, I also liked the Lewis re-signing so maybe I am just too positive to be counted on.

Because at least guys like McCoy, Griffen, and Poe had at one point in their careers actually been really good. The guys we are signing haven't sniffed "good" ever.

But McCoy didn't play and Poe was terrible. So are you equating name recognition to quality play instead of quality play to quality play?

Urban and Basham are both better than the guys they're replacing. So, by default, that's upgrading. They won't make us an elite unit, but they are an improvement on paper--which all we have to go by at this point.

Don't sign Basham and Urban and Watkins.............. pool the money and sign John Johnson and lock down one position that was a need. Then find guys like Watkins and Urban later in FA for real cheap.

Aldon Smith looked strong and aggressive early in the season last year. By the halfway point, he had slowed down tremendously. Maybe that's what has caused the Cowboys to be hesitant about bringing Aldon back? Or maybe, Aldon is asking for too much money to resign? Basham only cost $3 mil / year to sign.

They are just signing roster bodies. In no world can the Jones boys think that these guys make us much better on defense.

Basham is a good get with us already having Gregory and Lawrence. He might not pan out, but this deal is OK for depth. I'm not happy we didn't try to get the best DTs and haven't done anything worthwhile in the secondary or linebacker, but I'm OK with this.

No, what I am saying is at the time of their signing, guys like Poe and McCoy were guys that at least had a track record of high level play at some point in their careers. Griffen almost had 10 sacks in 2019 before we signed him.

These guys are just JAGs, with no real track record of anything but mediocre play. They are roster bodies, back up types.

We've seen this before over and over. Watkins and Urban are Thornton and Covington. We've tried this patchwork stuff before and it's never worked. Maybe instead of paying two JAGs at DT, pool their money, add a little bit more and get a starting caliber DT?

Oh absolutely. You're 100% right that that's a solid/sound strategy. I am just saying these guys are better than the ones they're replacing so we are improving, even if its only modestly lol

Nah, he knows his stuff. He just has strong opinions based on decades of Cowboys fandom and a lot times having a different opinion doesn't mean someone is wrong. The strategy he's outlined is absolutely a way this defense could have made a dramatic leap forward.
