I still don't know why he never got an opportunity based on his preseason performance. Then again, I remember who the head coach was then.

Hopefully, working with his former college coach will give Wilson a better opportunity to get on the field.

I thought I put this topic to rest last year. Wilson was obviously out of position too often when he played in the preseason. How do I know this? He was around the ball too much and had too many INTs for a safety in that scheme. The safeties were supposed to stay 15 yards back from the nearest WR and always be two steps late getting there to help. Wilson obviously didn’t listen.

I'm fine with this. Mind you a year ago we signed Iloka to play this role? Ha Ha is a much better player and fit. But it also gives Donovan Wilson a chance to take his spot.

I think the Dix signing eliminates McKinney with the first pick.
nope not at all. Changes nothing. Woods is on the last year of his rookie deal . Dix is on a 1 year deal, Thompson is on a very short deal. WE NEED A TOP FLIGHT STARTER. That hasn't changed.

I think you're interchanging free and strong safety candidates here.

Clinton-Dix has been signed to play free safety here.

Posters/fans saying he's NOT an upgrade over Heath may wanna read this........fact is, he's a damn good player. I had the same reservation until reading this. There are questions about this being his fourth team. Notice he was traded from the Packers to Skins while playing the 5th option during mid-season. Instead of resigning with the Skins, he signed a 1 year contract with the Bears in 2019. Also, remember for whatever reason there was an aggressive devaluation on the safety position 2018. Bottom line, the kids prove he has some serious skin on the wall. My only question now is what about Woods, who's ALSO a free safety. Both he and HaHa have spent their career at FS, meaning this doesn't answer our need for a box safety.

But no question, HaHa is waay better than Heath.........

Washington Commanders[edit]

On October 30, 2018, the Green Bay Packers traded Clinton-Dix to the Washington Commanders in exchange for a fourth round pick in the 2019 NFL Draft.[53] Head coach Jay Gruden immediately named Clinton-Dix the starting free safety. He replaced Montae Nicholson and started alongside strong safety D. J. Swearinger.[54] In Week 11, he collected a season-high 13 combined tackles (11 solo) during a 23–21 loss against the Houston Texans.[55] Clinton-Dix started all 16 games in 2018 and finished the season with 93 combined tackles (80 solo), six pass deflections, three interceptions, two forced fumbles, and one sack.[35] He received an overall grade of 79.3 from Pro Football Focus in 2018, which ranked as the 14th highest grade among all qualifying safeties.[56]

Oh wow. Yeah I assumed they'd leave Woods there. Not sure I want Woods at strong safety. They need to stick to a position to him and let him learn it.

I'm not sure what he is now.........but with the Packers he was solid. Even when they traded him to the Commanders. If i'm not mistaken it was a contract issue and they didn't want to pay him. He was highly ranked prior to getting to the Commanders and it seems like ever since then he hasn't been able to make it back to that level.

I think he's more physical than Clinton-Dix anyway. But given his upcoming contract situation, I'm not sure whether or not Woods is even in this team's long term plans or not? I'd expect them to take a wait-and-see approach this year to see how and if he factors in at strong safety or if a young guy like Donovan Wilson beats him outright for the role. That would probably be the most-preferable outcome.

More and more I’m thinking Chaisson in the first. Can grab a safety or corner in the second

Woods is a solid enough defensive back to have a role on this team. I think you get diminishing returns the more you trot him out there at either safety spot as a starter.

I think he can our Micah Hyde.

This year’s corner class is really weak.

You have Okudah as a top prospect.

Henderson as a quality prospect.

And then a bunch of guys I’m not enamored with.

He was actually pretty solid with the Skins......see my post. For the money, he's damn good signing IMO. I could be wrong, but I'm guessing his signing almost guarantees we take at least one CB with the first three draft picks.

I think a long term with Dak would spread out the cap hit this year and it be smaller than it currently is.
Not 100% sure, but I think for the first year, that is very rare with the massive signing bonus, etc.
I think his cap hit will be over 30

I think it depends. I think as it currently stands he could be a candidate to get signed like Anthony Brown did or like Heath has been for all these years. That's if Woods doesn't get outpriced. I'm not sure how he can when his position hasn't even been defined yet. Woods is definitely more physical than Clinton-Dix is though.

Ooooooo I Don't know about that. I seem to remember him stinking it up for the Skins. What post are you referring to? I remember at the time I think the Skins had Swearinger and Dix who both were highly ranked safeties but for whatever reason things spiraled out of control.
