The Spurs do not buy championships, they are not the yankees of the NBA. They win championships with humility and dignity, the Heat are the Yankees of the NBA and try and purchase a title.
Pop didnt even step into the lime light when the trophy was handed out, he stood back in the crowd and let the owner take all the glory.
This is off-topic, but I like Gregg Popovich's self-restraint. I remember one of the reporters doing an quick interview just after the half (I think) of a Finals game. The reporter asked, "What are you going to do about LeBron James?" At first he was about to respond with a comment which was completely deserving of such nonsense, caught himself, and gave a tactful answer. Pop is the total package. I haven't been a fan of an NBA team since the 76ers allowed Charles Barkley to leave. It won't happen, but if I were to choose a NBA team now, it would probably be San Antonio.

It's not just the 6 titles in 8 years that made them better.

It's pretty obvious if Jordan didn't leave for baseball for a couple years the Bulls very likely would have won 8 straight titles but you also have to factor in that before they won the title they also made the Eastern Conference Finals for two straight years prior to making it to the Finals so they played in 5 consecutive Eastern Conference finals and 8 of them in 10 years. That's about as good and consistent as a team can be.

That's not a knock on the Spurs cause 5 titles over 15 years, and what 6 or 7 Finals appearances, along with making the playoffs over and over is dang fine work.

They are the class of the NBA, without a doubt, since the Bulls run. I'd have to admit that obviously the Lakers are in that conversation as well because they had a pretty good Championship run as well but I'd give the nod to the Spurs over them.

Yes, to me the Bulls run was more impressive

I'm sure the Heat organization and fans are happy their team has made 4 straight Finals and are a two time Champion but the fact remains that they brought that trio together to win multiple titles (I was thinking like 3-4 straight) and instead they've split them. They've been as disappointing as they have been great when it comes to the Finals.

As a die hard Spurs fan, the joy and adulation I feeling right now, and the past 4 championships, will have to hold me over until my Cowboys can win one. I feel bad for those people who have never experienced their teams winning a championship.

This ^^^^! Im on cloud 9 right now, its illuminating to see that an organization can be run the right way and produce the results we expect.

Knew there was only a matter of time before a thread like this pops up.. lol

Been reading FB posts and articles all day about the Spurs now the top team in Texas, etc. *shrug*

Good team, but folks seem to be manufacturing some sort of disrespect towards them as if they weren't a well-respected team. Weird.

Outside of Texas the Spurs are an afterthought... even by fans of the NBA.

A sports columnist for the Buffalo paper is a huge Spurs fan. And he's always talking about the best team that no one talks about, i.e. the Spurs.

I remember celebrating their 99 championship, because I happened to be in San Antonio at the time. My friend didn't even know they were playing, but we rode around honking horns and whatnot like fools all night. Good times! lol

That said, Spurs are a good team, but when the coach is the most dynamic personality they have on the team, they're not going to get the same level of popularity as others in the NBA.

Cowboys = Spurs is really laughable. The Spurs have the best head coach in basketball while the Cowboys are stuck with a red headed trainee.

LOL!

You're right, the Spurs are never going to get the respect they deserve outside the great state of Texas.

But I will say I'm envious of the consistency of the organization and only wished the brain-trust of the football team north of San Antonio carried through with the same discipline.

Are the Spurs to the NBA what the Cowboys were to the NFL in the 60&70s?

Would you like to see the boys run like that, is that even possible?

Actually, I know of at least one comparison that could be drawn between the Cowboys now and the current Spurs. The Spurs current team is made up of guy's from all over the world - they are a true international team. Granted, the Cowboys don't have alot of guys from around the world, but they have been really good at turning over every available stone to find talent, which is why I tend to get more excited about the UDFA's every year then the guy's who were deemed worthy of a draft pick.

Really respect what the spurs have done. Everyone on that team is sold out for each other . I noticed how happy they all were for the young kid that won MVP last night. Props to the spurs

It goes well beyond "Pop".

Pop and Duncan.
Pop had the vision, but had to have one of the most respected players in the history of the NBA to back him and he did.

Major props to both of them to make a truly unique situation in today's NBA. Something Winning, something sustainable, something to be respected, something not anyone can pull off.
They needed each other and they deserve credit for committing to something special that actually needed patience to perfect.

Because of this they can be expected to be in the hunt despite their aging core for even more years.
Don't be surprise to see Duncan and Pop walk off the floor for the final time with 7 rings.

Not calling it- just saying I won't be surprised.

Remember we are talking 60/70s

That puts Tom Landry at the forefront not
the red headed wonder... as in I wonder what to do next.

Different sport.

People also don't remember how Popovich was killed by the media and fans when he stepped into the job.

Agree with everything but the "Humility and dignity" bit. They have those things, but that's not "how they win". They win with execution as a team. They don't rely on a player to "Take over" games. They take over games with their great execution as a team, both offensively and defensively.

Pop is one of the greatest coaches in sports history. Imagine a team full of superstars coached by him? Imagine the Miami Heat with Pop as the Coach.

Popovich and Phil Jackson are a joy to watch coach. Their adjustments, strategy, and more during a series are impeccable.
