Due to all the comments about Swaim being so slow, I looked up what his 40 time was. I was also curious about our other TE 40 times.

I was surprised with what I found. You would think Escobar would be one of the faster TEs but he is actually the slowest one on the active roster.

Hanna has/had WR speed when he was drafted. Why we didn't develop him more as a pass catching TE is mind boggling. I remember when he was drafted some here were hoping he turned into a A. Hernandez type of player. Instead, we turned him into a blocking TE.

The following are predraft numbers:

Swaim:
40 Low: 4.61 40 Time: 4.71 40 High: 4.82

Witten:
40 Low: 4.55 40 Time: 4.65 40 High: 4.76

Hanna:
40 Low: 4.33 40 Time: 4.43 40 High: 4.54

Escobar:
40 Low: 4.68 40 Time: 4.78 40 High: 4.89

Gathers:
40 Low: 4.72 40 Time: 4.79 40 High: 4.90

Witten is obviously in the twilight of his career. Father Time has been good to him but he stands still for no one. Here's hoping Hanna returns successfully to 100% and that Swaim continues to develop as he has so far. We've actually been pretty fortunate in having each of them.

Hanna ran a 4.49 at the combine but even then, people said they were surprised by his time because he didn't play at that speed, and we've seen that to be true.

Why we didn't develop Hanna is about him having a very limited skill set.

If your mind boggles on that I worry how you will handle more complex problems

Have a hard time believing Hanna ever ran a 4.33
Me too
In fact I don't unless it was one of those on campus times that are always so off.
You here claims of one guy 40 yards always with a stop watch and no one at the starting line. Guys even start less than 40 yards away sometime. it's comical.

I always ask the same question...anyone ever wonder why on-campus times are ALWAYS faster? lol

In any case, his combine time of 4.46 to 4.49 was really fast.

If Swaim ran a 4.5 most would find something else to find fault with.

It's just who he is. At OU, he'd have one game a year when he would just go off. He'd disappear the rest of the season. Same as here.

When Hanna returns as the blocking TE, that means he'll be getting those drag routes that Swaim is getting now; I think we'll get to see his running ability a little more.

Hanna was the fastest Tight End at the Combine in 2012. He was regarded as a pass catcher with limited blocking skills. Wonder if the James Hanna at the combine was someone else who snuck in (ala Prime a few years ago).
