Cowboys have already gotten at least 4 starters out of the 2023 NFL Draft. If you give the Eagles credit for trading their 1st round pick to the Titans for A.J. Brown, then you MUST also give the Cowboys credit for trading 3 low round picks for starters in Hankins, Cooks and Gilmore. Whether Schoonmaker or Ferguson becomes TE1, the truth is that TE1 and TE2 play a lot of snaps. Schoonmaker is a better prospect than Dalton Schultz was when drafted. Overshown will likely become a nickel Linebacker/Safety for the Cowboys in the mold of Jevon Kearse. The Cowboys new Dline Coach Shariff Floyd was on the radio, and indicated that Fehoko will be asked to bulk up, and play in the rotation as a 3-tech DT with Odighizuwa.

This may not seem like a sexy draft, but the Cowboys are using their draft capital to build a team for now and the future.
  • 1st Round #26 - DT Mazi Smith, Michigan
  • 2nd Round #58 - TE Luke Schoonmaker, Michigan
  • 3rd Round #90 - LB DeMarvion Overshown, Texas
  • 4th Round #129 - DE Viliami Fehoko, San Jose State
  • 5th Round #161 - WR Brandin Cooks, Oregon (Cowboys trade pick to Texans)
  • 5th Round #169 - OG Asim Richards, North Carolina
  • 5th Round #176 - CB Stephon Gilmore, South Carolina (Cowboys trade pick to Colts)
  • 6th Round #178 - CB Eric Scott, Jr., Southern Mississippi (Cowboys trade 2024 5th round pick for Chiefs 2023 6th round pick)
  • 6th Round #204 - DT Johnathan Hankins, Ohio State (Cowboys trade pick to Raiders)
  • 6th Round #212 - RB Deuce Vaughn, Kansas State
  • 7th Round #244 - WR Jalen Brooks, South Carolina

Overall nice draft.
I don't know if it's a nice draft yet. Time will tell. But overall, the Cowboys have drafted well over the years, so I'm inclined to give them the benefit of the doubt. I think the overall talent level in the draft this year was down, so it may be a down draft for all the NFL teams, not just Dallas. I think using the draft picks to trade for skilled veterans in a draft low on talent is a good use of draft capital.

hate the tight end pick could have picked the same player later in the draft. the rest of the draft is ok like the original post says might get four players that are future starters or good role players. the cowboys did not get a real impact player in this draft which will hurt in the future to me.

I'm ok with the Smith pick. I understand that one. He's slow on film, but that could just be a function of what he was asked to do.

I don't understand a single one of the picks afterward. Not one makes any sense with who was on the board.

What happened to "Trader Jerry"?? A couple of small trades up and this is a very good draft.

SMH

Here's hoping for the best.

Quit referring to internet rankings. Dallas’ draft board is nothing similar so you will constantly be disappointed. Just the way it is.

The Cowboys found out what it was like to play against a more physical team the last 2 years and lost to SF. This draft addresses the toughness factor in Dallas. This draft is about getting more physical.
Bingo! Take a bow..........

Mazi Smith said when interviewed by Jane Slater. He was not asked to be a pass rusher in college. He knows he can help in the run game. But when they ask him to learn to rush the passer, he will be ready to learn to do so As to whatever they asked of him.

I think Schoonmaker is going to be an H-Back/Vertical Threat. His combine numbers are very similar to Mark Andrews.
He looks to have some speed to him. Knows how to get open.
Someone posted he body catches in an other thread. But that is not true. They showed high lights and said he can catch with his hands from the ones I seen. Can go Get the ball as well.

Exactly. This team needed more grit.
