Cowboys versus Browns just might be the biggest game of the year

Acquiring Deshaun Watson was supposed to give the Cleveland Browns the leadership that would take their offense to the next level. With Amari Cooper and plenty of offensive talent the Browns hope to take the next step. Having Miles Garrett and a stellar defense, the Cleveland Browns are a legitimate super power- on paper.
Likewise, the Dallas Cowboys are supposedly an established group that should easily overpower any but the very best teams. And they have won 12 games in each of the past three seasons.
Game one of the 2024 NFL season for these two teams will undoubtedly send one team on their way to the playoffs with a confident mindset, but for the loser it very well could send that team into the kind of self doubt that would destroy their hopes. Winning would give the Cleveland Browns the confidence of knowing they are for real, and Kevin Stefanski's way of doing things is paying off. Losing, however, will most likely send thoughts into the minds of fans and players alike of another year of mediocrity, and those kinds of thoughts kill confidence.
The Cowboys are at a crossroads; winning helps them move forward with confidence that they are stable enough as a perennial contender to believe that it's only a matter of time before they put the pieces in place to be a championship caliber team.
Losing to the Browns, however, could send a shock wave through the team and the front office that makes them aware that they have peaked at their potential, and are on the way down instead of up.
It's a big enough game that the Cowboys could come away with the message that their window of opportunity is no longer there, and that kind of doubt can destroy a season.
It might be week one, but I believe is a "must win" for both teams.
First game out of the box, is still preseason, it’s nice to get a win the first game, but it has nothing to do with the outcome of the season.

This game and week 1 in general for the entire nfl isn’t making or breaking anyone’s season.
It’s still preseason, the first game. Just getting your feet under your self totally agree.

The 2023 season was the first Week 1 victory of McCarthy's tenure with the Cowboys, putting his overall record at 1-3.
He beat the 2023 giants lol.!

The Lions beating the Chiefs in week 1 certainly made a statement that the Lions lived up to........however it didn't have any lasting effect on the Chiefs so no damage there

And everybody knows that we are the NFC version of the Chiefs so I don't think a loss would effect us in the least

lol the NFL made it the " Game of the week" .... guess they are juvenile too?

And I Guess Tom Landry was juvenile and stupid too.
Tom put a big importance on winning game 1 each season. No matter who they played , he felt it was important to start
off with a win. But what did he know? Not as much as the posters in this thread ! lol
Landry also put great importance on scoring first and winning the first quarter.

Realistically speaking, if we're not up by 10 points by the end of the first quarter, our season is shot.

With the shortened preseason, and most teams barely playing starters, the first game of the NFL season is really just similar to a preseason game in many aspects. Won't mean much in the longer term unless a major player gets injured.

No one likes to lose. I don't even like losing in preseason. But besides the actual win or loss, week 1 is pretty meaningless. Didn't we lose the opening game to Tampa two years in a row, then still finish 12-5. I don't find week 1 to be indicative of anything. But it does suck losing on the opening week.

If the Cowboys win, there is no doubt that you will downplay the game and find a way to trash Dak. The first four weeks are for settling in. You will know more then. The first week has never been a must win in the history of football. The Cowboys recent history shows they have a better chance of making the playoffs if they lose week 1.

Nah, the first 7 games, assuming all teams on the schedule don't have huge dropoffs from last year. That will tell you everything we need to know about this team and whether they are just the same frauds we've seen the past several years or legit contenders. Either they come through with some big wins against legit playoff teams or the wheels completely fall off.

In wouldnt call the first few games meaningless because they still actually count towards your overall win/loss record. God forbid the Cowboys miss the playoffs. divisional title or a bye because we treated the first few games like the pre-season.......all games matter.

So the whole season hinges on the Cleveland game? Could anyone think of something more ridiculous? One game at a time. No use panicking before the first game. Deep breaths.

Every game against a non top tier team is a must win as I think it’s gonna be a lot harder to find wins this year than last few…esp for the current team

A week 1 game can never be the biggest game of the year for any NFL team. Whether they win or lose in week 1,
