So, before the game, everyone was totally down on Weeden....he's done nothing in the NFL.
Then, he executes the game plan, is extremely accurate on all but two throws, and leads the offense to 28 points without Dez, and all people do is gripe that he didn't throw the ball deep.
Geez...he's a freakin' backup QB with very little talent at receiver. So people think Romo would have thrown deep without Dez and with Trufont blanketing TWill. Some of you seem to think Atlanta played a different D in the second half because the 28 points put up marching up and down the field finally convinced them that they had no reason to fear Weeden to Williams deep!? Ummmm, do you think they played a half against our crappy wideouts without Dez afraid of us going deep? That's one of the dumbest ideas I've heard.
That's the Atlanta defense....a single high safety and crowd the line...that's all they've done in three games. Did the LBs maybe creep up because we were bashing them running? Sure, but it's not like they had an extra player to run up there. They never stopped playing a safety over the top. That means the 8th guy in the box, a DB had to cover the TE on pass plays or cover a receiver if 3 wideouts or they had to go nickel/dime.
Their DL beat our OL in the 2nd half...they got off blocks and got penetration and collapsed the pocket significantly more in the second half.
I don't believe for a second that Romo would have forced the ball downfield to Williams and Street...no way. What he likely would have done better is audible out of some runs to passes or vice versa better. No surprise there...he's a franchise QB. We apologists are not arguing that Weeden should be a starting QB for anyone, but to blame the backup QB for a loss when the only real argument is he didn't drive the ball downfield with T Will drawing attention that would usually be on Dez is just crazy.
I can assure you Weeden IS likely to crash and burn and lose us some games before Romo returns, but this wasn't one of them. If you'd told me before the game or any upcoming games that Weeden would perform as he did today, I'd take it...you get that from a backup QB and a lack of weapons, I assume that gives us a chance to win a few games.
This was about poor execution in the run game the second half and a Defense that had only 2-3 decent players in the front 7....no pressure and couldn't stop the run.
