Cowboys wasting draft picks

Much of this is 20-20 hindsight on Romo. Denver still may have drafted Cutler, Saints still may have traded for Brees. Romo was still an unproven UDFA at the time. A QB that sat for what, until his 4th year to get playing time, on a team that really needed a QB.
Parcels even said, it was not time to put in Romo. Now I know Parcels was more conservative on that, but he has proved to be right on this IMO.

Not likely. Cutler was drafted in 2006. Romo would have been either the starter or the heir apparent by then.

The Saints didn't trade for Brees, they signed him as a free agent.

Denver wanted Romo in 2003 and the Saints wanted him in 2006. Given what they offered, they were going to start Romo.

Shanahan loved him. Imagine if Romo had wound up in Washington pre-RG3. He would now be our worst nightmare.

I'm not sure what is going on, but the Cowboys are seriously wasting late round draft picks.

Brice Butler needed to be on the roster for 6 games before the trade resulted in swapping draft picks. They kept him on the roster, and did not play him even after he returned from being hurt. I'll be a bit miffed if he doesn't play later this year or make the team next year.

Christine Michael needed to be on the 46 man active roster 3 times for the trade to count, and they played him 5 times before deciding to cut him.

First, I think Butler has more dimensions to his game than Williams, so when it comes to talent evaluation I really question the team. They sat Dunbar for years without using him. Continue to misuse/underuse Cole Beasley and Gavin Escobar... and not only is this costing us games, but it is now costing us draft picks.

With that being said, we should have a ton of compensatory draft picks a 3rd, 4th, 5th, and three 6th rounders. Not sure if we lost one for Hardy or not.

The fact that you can now trade these picks will be huge for us. If we didn't lose any CDPs we could use our 3rd and our 2nd to trade up into the first and get another key player. Maybe get both a corner and a running back in the first and still have a 3rd round draft pick later.

Everything you say sounds good about moving up in the draft but it won't happen teams want to much to get two 1st rd picks like that !

Think your dreaming they couldn't win with Payton they sure as hell won't win with Tony bad back and all .

I think you've misunderstood.

I'm not saying in the last two years, though I think Romo probably takes that offense to the super bowl last year whereas Manning fell apart. I'm talking about if Romo was in Denver since 2003.

Since 2003, Denver has had a top 5 ranked defense (ppg) 3 times, and a top ten, 6 times.

My belief is that Shanahan probably stays in Denver if he has the QB as opposed to being fired when Cutler didn't pan out.

Generally a 3rd will get you into the bottom half of the 1st with a 2nd round draft pick.

Hanna will be a FA, so that is why they went after Swaim, I am fine with that. I just had an issue with trading a pick. but it's done, and hope he works out.
I think losing Murray would have been a 3rd. But if Hardy meets the incentives, which I believe he has, that offsets the values of the contracts. Losing Parnell then nets us the 4th round comp.

I have this feeling Hanna is going to end up with the Patriots. His athleticism is very much like Hernandez.

I'll never understand how we couldn't find a place in this offense for a TE with 4.49 speed.

Yes he will go somewhere and have a decent career. I like Hanna actually. Seems he does make some plays when I the game with very limited catches. His run blocking is supposed to be good.

But being a FA and with Witten still going strong, and the investment in Escobar, he probably won't be back.

Just about everything you stated is wrong.

Where does the 3rd round comp pick come from?

OTC has a 4th/5th and 3 sixth rounders. Basically, the team will be pretty much where they started after its all said and done.

Murray would have been a borderline 3rd at best but he is nullified by Hardy.

Parnell should be a 4th.

If not for Dallas and Parcels, Romo may have been out of football before his career really ever began.
So how is that a waste?

False. Someone would have picked them up. Denver was eyeing him I believe. They were still looking for their QB after Elway and having little to no luck.

And he means wasted in terms of getting what he really wants and that's success. He's had none besides a couple of wild card wins. We have did a poor job surrounding him with a coaching staff who knows what they are doing and a solid cast. He's never had a good defense here and he's had to play under Wade and then Garrett. No chance of success with them 2.

Is that right?

A 3rd might get you from the very early 2nd round to the very late 1st round but that's about it.

Unless, of course, you're beginning that phone call with "Hello, Mr. Jones....."

Denver, and one other team were interested in Romo in 2003. Romo nearly got cut in I believe 2005.

So yes, it very much could have been the case Romo never had a career once he was cut. Also, Broncos had Plummer in 2003, Romo wasn't going to overtake him.

Any pick after the 4th is probably less than 50% to stick. I am by no means defending the FO but I am not getting riled up over 6th and 7th rounders. Also you can sign from other teams PS, Irving for example. So getting developmental and STer is doable even if you dont draft them.

We aren't getting a third, hardy offset that. Only two teams I think I read are suppose to be getting a third.

We need Butler active over Streets but like they say, Streets plays special teams so I guess.

Yes they wanted to sign him, Payton wanted to trade for him. But it does not mean the path would have been the same.
Romo would been a career back up in NO behind Brees.
Denver, who really knows. He would have ridden the bench longer than in Dallas.

I could be mistaken but I believe Payton wanted yo trade a 2nd for Romo to be his QB in Nola. We didnt take it and he signed Bree's, who wasnt the commodity he is now due to shoulder surgeries
