The comp picks should make up for it. Here's a look at the Cowboys 6th and 7th round picks, non-specialists, since the Parcells era. And yes, I can do this for any team...it's not just the Cowboys:
2003: BJ Tucker, Zuriel Smith, Justin Bates
2004: Nate Jones, Patrick Crayton, Jacques Reeves
2005: Justin Beriault, Rob Pettiti, Jay Ratliff
2006: Montavious Stanley, Pat McQuistan, EJ Whitley
2007: Courtney Brown, Alan Ball
2008: Erik Walden
2009: Stephen Hodge, John Phillips, Mike Mickens, Manuel Johnson
2010: Sam Young, Jamar Wall, Sean Lissemore
2011: Dwayne Harris, Shawn Chapas, Bill Nagy
2012: James Hanna, Caleb McSurdy
2013: DeVontae Holloman
2014: Ben Gardner, Will Smith, Ahmad Dixon, Ken Bishop, Terrance Mitchell
2015: Mark Nzeocha, Geoff Swaim, Laurence Gibson
Here's a look at the Steelers, whom everybody seems to lover their drafts:
2003: JT Wall
2004: Bo Lacy, Matt Kranchick, Drew Caylor, Eric Taylor
2005: Chris Kemoeatu, Shawn Nua, Noah Herron
2006: Marvin Phillip, Cedric Humes
2007: Dallas Baker
2008: Mike Humpal, Ryan Mundy
2009: R'Shon Harris, AQ Shipley, David Johnson
2010: Jonathan Dwyer, Antonio Brown, Doug Worthington
2011: Keith Williams, Baron Batch
2012: Toney Clemons, David Paulson, Terrance Frederick, Kelvin Beachum
2013: Justin Brown, Vince Williams, Nicholas Williams
2014: Jordan Zumwalt, Daniel McCullers, Rob Blanchflower
2015: Leterrius Walton, Anthony Chickillo, Gerod Hollimon
I would say overall the Cowboys have drafted better than the Steelers in the 6th and 7th rounds. The Steelers had one incredible pick in Antonio Brown. Dallas had an incredible pick in Jay Ratliff (granted, not on the same level as Brown)
But what you see out of most of these picks are guys that are either potential special teams stars, players with great speed that teams will give a shot, players that have a major injury issues and a team is willing to give them a shot and some player that has something unique about them (i.e. size, can play all positions, height, etc). Or some of them are there to be a cheap 3rd-string for a year or two instead of having to pay a veteran more money.
Obviously, we can say that we shouldn't give up on 6th and 7th rounders because we are one of the better 6th/7th round drafting teams and we have gotten some help from them. I'm not particularly thrilled with our special teams, but ST isn't why the Cowboys are 4-9. So, giving a shot to a veteran player who has made an NFL team, like Michael did, to fill a hole is not a bad deal for a 7th rounder, especially if we can make up for it with comp picks.
I am more concerned with the issues we have and how good are we at addressing those issues. What Garrett has for him as a coach is, in general, he's done a good job with his staff at developing talent. The draft doesn't concern me as much as it would in the Wade era.
But, we still have yet to see if Garrett can develop a QB. There's other stuff as well such as the play calling, lack of aggressive play calling on both sides of the ball, being able to stay healthy and we have to almost completely rebuild the secondary now and Jerome Henderson has shown me nothing to give me confidence he can do it.
