cowboyszone:Draft Notes: Smith Gives Dallas a Much Bigger ''Problem'' at Pick 9

It isn't about some website's ranking or anything of the sort. It's about performance, and to a limited extent, recognition of that performance as well.

I'll use your own words to counter your argument: go ahead and point to WHO rated Tyron Smith highly ( as in the same league as the Paces, and Ogdens, and Longs of the NFL when they were at that particular stage ).

and for your information, I do watch Pac 10 football. It's the only thing that's worth anything on TV on Saturday nights.

You said, "The key is to see how and what they've done over the past 2 seasons and, obviously, Smith's body of work wasn't impressive enough to rated as dominant. If that O-lineman is not rated as potentially being dominant"

The above quotation is simply your arbitrary "keys" that you adhere to, it's certainly not the industry standard.

Also, the point you're supposedly trying to use on me is a joke. Tell me, how exactly do I find a website that ranks players according to how they "dominate" and then how they compare to Jonathen Ogden, Pace and Long?

How about you show me a draft website that ranks its players with chocolate chip cookies icons; the better they are, the more chocolate chips they have in the represenative cookie.

Wes Bunting and WalterFootball are just two sites I looked up that had Tyron Smith ranked high back in April and July of '10, well before any weight gain and the college football season started.

Beyond that, you're missing the point if you're simply looking to draft websites for indicators of who is "dominate," or looking to see if they were being talked about highly prior to the offseason.

Football players, not just offensive linemen, as you're claiming make meteoric jumps up the draft. Guys like Tyson Alualu and Mike Iupati were not considered top half of the 1st round prospects going into the '09 season. Blaine Gabbert wasn't even being talked about that highly during this time last year.

Yea gabbert wasn't ranked high until the news of Luck staying in college.

He is more of a sure thing than many of our options. He is damn well more of a sure thing that Prince!

IMO Smith - Carimi -Sherrod

any of them with a trade down would be fine with me

Tyron Smith OT USC 6-5 #307 - Quick feet off the snap. Good initial quickness to reach defenders that are shaded over him. Good positional blocker who will wall off defenders from the ball carrier. Has better than advertised strength for his size. Can drive defenders down the LOS on the play side or the back side of a play, allowing the ball carrier with a huge hole to run through or cut back through. Good mobility to pull and get up to the second level. His quick feet allow for him to be effective in pass protection. Slides out laterally well to mirror pass rushers and gets good depth on his kick slide. Plays with good balance and flashes a strong punch to jolt the pass rusher.

So the weight issue is non factor for me

Gabe Carimi OT Wis 6-7 #315 - ideal size for the position and long arms to direct the defender. He has outstanding functional strength. Can drop anchor and defend against the bull rush with consistency, and has the drive and power to excel as a run blocker. Is able to bury people once he gets control. Is effective getting to the second level and can destroy people there. Is surprisingly effective in space. Despite his limited athleticism, he is still agile enough, and has decent footwork, to be an effective pass blocker at the next level. Can use his length and long arms (35 2/8) to steer the speed rushers around the pocket. Has a good initial punch and can deliver a strong, quick jolt that can keep the defender off balance. Plays with an edge, but doesn't lose control. Smart player who understands the blocking scheme well.

Derek Sherrod, OT Mississippi State 6-6 #305 - Long body and arms coupled with good footwork allow him to get excellent depth. Has solid, though not exceptional hand action and works hard to maintain position. Shows ability to pick-up pressure from linebackers or safeties. Able to use size to seal defender and willing to look upfield for the next block. Great speed for use in pulling situations or in screens

This guy seems to be one whose combine performance will make or break at least my opinion of drafting him at 9.

He shut down one of the best pass rushers in college football. That is production. The guy produces at a top level.

His size is a concern but at 305 if he can perform well in the agility and speed drills, I will find him worthy of a selection at 9.

As of now, i cannot say. At 285 i say no but at 305 with good measurables i have to say yes.

Prince = 4 year starter.

Smith = Junior who has NEVER played LT

I'm worried about Prince's speed too but your point is just wrong.

I'm not sure Prince will be all that great of a CB in this league. I'm thinking safety. He just doesn't have the closing speed to be a CB vs the faster WRs in this league.

He is consistently burned on streak routes. Once the gap has been opened between him and a fast WRs, he has ZERO ability to close it. That will get his lunch eaten at the pro level.

Give me a potential franchise LT please.

Wes Bunting agrees with you.

Just wanted to mention that D'Brickashaw Ferguson played college ball at 295. He's listed at 310lbs now and from what I hear, he's doing pretty well.

If Peterson or Quinn don't drop to the 9th pick, Jerrah may drop down a FEW picks to grab the BPA OT in the draft. I have ZERO problem with drafting Tyson and anyone mentioning his weight is delusional. Once our former (now rehired) strength coach gets him in the fold, he'll NOT only be heavier but stronger, faster, and more explosive off the snap. Even IF he doesn't start at RT this year, he WILL be starting somewhere on the OL by next year (barring an injury).

And, the ONLY reason I mention Peterson or Quinn is because Jerrah WANTS an impact player again THIS year. Hopefully, in this draft, we actually have a 'strategy' to improve our Offense and Defense. We can do BOTH by drafting the BPA OT in Rd 1 (i.e. Smith or Sherrod), BPA OG in Rd 2 (i.e. B. Ijalana), BPA NT in Rd 3, BPA CB in Rd 4, BPA big RB (i.e. John Clay 6'1" 260lbs) or FS (Teejay Johnson TCU 6'0" 194lbs) in Rd 5 and 6. This would allow the Boys to play 'smash-mouth' (i.e. ball control) football with the big boys (i.e. Green Bay, Pittsburgh, Ravens, Saints, Jets, Giants, & Patriots). It was also give our OL two new BIG BODIES and our defense a mammoth NT (by sliding Ratliff to DE).

If everyone remembers the 90's, the Boys HAD to best OL and DL in football and everyone copied our model (which included DL 'rotations' to keep everyone fresh and fast). Jerrah could also sign via Free Agency an athletic ILB to backup Sean Lee or Brookings and any other perceived 'depth' weakness.

Jason Garrett remembers the 90's Cowboys very well and hopefully has a PLAN in his mind to model THIS year's NFL Draft/free agency signings/off-season workouts after that team. He ONLY has to ensure Jerrah keeps HIS 'droolings' for an impact player to an Offensive Lineman. If he drops down a bit, we may even get an extra 3rd pick (to snatch up a hard nosed ILB).
