Cowlishaw: Cowboys trying something new; might work, might get Romo beat up

Romo may be no Brady but I would LOOOOOVE to see Romo and Dez play in a uptempo offense that still runs the ball but involves a lot of quick screens.

Romo is no Brady. He was better than Brady and deserved MVP honors. Brady deserved cheating honors and deserves to be in the Hall of Shame.

so are you mad we:

1) went after ANOTHER LB?
2) didn't get this RB with said potential who in 3 years may pan out and help us in his contract year (and in case you missed it we're gearing up to win THIS year, not when the RB comes around)
3) still wanna slap "This staff and their bull**** beliefs" when they've done all they have done so far this offseason where it would seem that scoring 3 first round draft picks still upsets you cause we didn't get a vaunted RB to not help us this year, but years down the line.
4) maybe.

got it. and you wonder where the name came from. :)

1. No, I'm scratching my head that we took an LB when we added a countless number in FA over an RB with potential and reward outweighed the risk due to falling into the 4th.

2. Who the hell says it will take 3 years to pan out? Are we talking CB here? It's an RB, they don't have a huge developmental side when it comes to running and receiving.

3. No one is denying that we got Gregory and Collins for a good price. We got Jones where he should have been drafted. That doesn't take away that there was an RB in the 4th that would have made far more sense than adding another LB to this roster.

yea, a lot of people seem to be doing that for reasons i can't understand other than a "hurting for real news" media made it an issue to flog the cowboys with, yet how many other teams who could use a *rb with potential" pass? oh. a lot. but many don't care cause the COWBOYS did it and it's evil.

oh that explains murray taking the world by storm his first year.

wait...

to you. given the last few seasons of picks many "educated fans" cried over the last few years, i'm not going to hang my hat on getting my boner mad we didn't take someone *I* thought was a position of need cause *I* know better than our staff.

i mean, what have they done for us fans lately?

wait...

I would have taken a chance on Ayaji in the 3rd round. We could have taken Chaz Green a lot later and quite possibly use a 5th or even 6th rounder on him. Sure people are scared about his knee - similar to Ronald Leary. But when all said in done Chaz Green is nothing more than a backup this year. Possibly won't ever start and possibly never play throughout his career. So he is just as bad as a risk than Ajayi.

But Ajayi would have been the starter this year and thus we would have had more value with Ajayi than Green. Ajayi is even better than Randle and Dunbar - who would have complimented McFadden.

If Ajayi would have been drafted by Dallas there would have been no RB controversy and that position would have been solidified by Ajayi being the starter and McFadden coming in as the change of pace back. Dallas would have looked even smarter with the selection of Ajayi even bordering on genius - and nobody would be criticizing Dallas for taking Ajayi.

As of now, people are concerned about McFadden not being able to handle the load and worried a bit about his production. We also have Green looking god awful in training camp and even labeling him a bust. Some things you can't change. But I sure did wish Dallas could have taken Ajayi. It would have been an almost perfect draft if they did.

Would anyone have been that upset if we chose Ajayi and got rid of Dunbar? I am sure this board would have been talking about Ajayi being our day one starter or at least taking the spot at some point during the season.

My biggest problem is this: McFadden is injury prone, I don't think anyone denies this. The likelihood that he is injured at some point in this season is high. So, we are then stuck with Randle, Williams, and Dunbar. Williams risk of injury is high, so he goes down, we are stuck with who? We have Randle and Dunbar and I'm guessing someone we sign from FA. This is where things start to become even more worrisome and what we should have planned for.

I'm not sure the Cowboys are as comfortable at RB as Cowlishaw implies considering they brought in a ton of RBs for visits -- there just wasn't great RB value when the Cowboys picked, and they stuck to their board.

and that's all there is to it. some wanted to take a RB just so they can to "whew - we picked one!" and that's whats burned us in the past. we saw better value, knowing things were still NOT over at the RB position, and went with it.

people just complain to complain. understanding why, too much time.

Randle will be a two down back, with McFadden the new 3rd down back. Running game should still be decent, with a chance to surprise. Both can hit the home run, and I would think last year's fumble issues at the RB position should be reduced with the departure of Murray. The main thing I will miss is last year Murray was in a contract year, and that seemed to motivate him to exceed beyond previous years' efforts. 3rd and short, can we still run it.

good god, do you always sit around at home and think of worse case scenario then make life fit that whether it does or not?

1) i doubt many would have cared we ditched dunbar for a 4th round pick. some would have. some are still panties-in-a-wad upset we didn't take some *potential* they liked vs. what the cowboys did.
2) yea, and murray never EVER got hurt.
3) meh, i'm done here. you're just gonna make crap up to worry about now and no amount of logic will stop you.

The problem with the Wilson pick is that we most likely could have gotten him in the 5th round. We could have afforded to wait one round for him since we already added depth, and it's not as though this guy is some all-world talent. Ajayi and his potential is a lot higher than Wilson's, and he was there in the 4th.

Murray in his first start broke Emmitt Smith's single game rushing record. He gained nearly 900 yards through 7 games and was an effective receiver. I would say he did just fine.

I don't know about other fans, but I was never upset about the picks we made the past few years, I at least understood them. I wasn't even upset that we moved up for Claiborne, we were in need of an upgrade in our secondary after watching the Giants WRs do hurdles over our CBs and letting Newman walk.

Frankly I think Dunbar is wasted space. He's consider a vet among the group but he's never scored a TD since he's been here. People criticize those that bring up the concerns we have at the RB position. But I think Dallas can do better. Ajayi was there for the taking. He would have made this draft almost stellar if we took him in the 3rd. He's better than both Randle and Dunbar. We didn't really need Green to be taken in the 3rd. He could have been take much later and could have gotten all the drafties we had now plus Ajayi.

Now we only have McFadden to turn to and if he's injured we have Randle and Dunbar. Great!

Randle is a scandal waiting to happen and Dunbar is nothing more than subpar.

maybe.

then again we could have:
gotten frederick in the 2nd. *maybe*.
gotten hitchens in later rounds *maybe*

so people saying and swearing about targeted talent being lower on THEIR boards, it amazes me they get "hurt" it would seem that the cowboys board was for some unexplainable reason, different. they saw value elsewhere and instead of saying "wow, wonder why they did that" it's usually "man, what a stupid move".

there was a time you could say that about almost every draft pick. certainly that isn't to say they're getting them all right now, but they are going by their own board and so far the percentages have been very acceptable and to a large degree, successful.

so i won't get all upset we didn't take a 4th round RB who in all likelyhood would never have had much of an impact in our running game when the 4 others we have *with experience of some kind* are already written off as failures.

i would say murray did just fine also. he had a few great games and one stellar season.

in 4 years.

i'm not complaining we lost murray, i'm saying we will get by and survive. we've pretty much gone perfect on OL moves the last few years and we'll see that pay off. if you feel it was the RB making the grade last year and not so much the OL well then as dave mason would say, we just disagree.

whoah oh oh...we just disagree.

and this off-season isn't over yet so please save eventual hand wringing for when it is.

Murray went 2 and a half seasons with only missing 2 games, 37 out of 39 games played? Tell me how Williams has done since entering the league. How about McFadden? McFadden's game starts don't tell the full story either. So even when he played 12-13 games, he's always had lingering injuries. He also has big problems with his hamstrings, so anyone who puts his issues on the offensive line need to read up on his injury history, it had nothing to do with the line he was running behind.

Not sure what I'm making up here. That McFadden and Williams are injury prone? What would you like me to say, because they are with the Cowboys, that they are injury free?

Frederick was a need, a need during a time when OL were flying off the board. That draft shifted quickly and was shaking up draft boards in the first round. That is far more understandable than us discussing a LB in the 4th that was projected by some to go in the 5th or 6th. I'd even say the reach for Hitchens was a little more understandable.

And with how injury prone two of our RBs are and one being nothing more than a scatback, I would say the likelihood of Ajayi finding his way into the starting role and having success is high. If any RB can run behind this line, I see no reason why you don't do your best to put the best RB you can back there (Without an absurd trade/contract, of course).

I think the offensive line AND the RB both complimented each other. An offensive line creating holes and helping our RB to get 1,000 yards before contact tells us about our offensive line, an RB getting nearly 1,000 after contact speaks about the RBs running abilities. Both should be given credit and thinking it will be easy to duplicate that is a major mistake.

mcfadden, sure. but no one i don't believe is looking for him to be the #1 back. i would think by now people would realize that unless that would quell unfounded fears.

i'll say this one more time then i'm out cause you and reason don't seem to want to get along.

i'd rather have kept murray. yes. didn't work out.
i have no issue NOT drafting a 4th round RB as they wouldn't help us THIS year in our push. murray wasn't murray til year 4 so we've got time if you REALLY must compare anyone to murray.

now, if for some reason Ajay or whoever lights the world in fire, and shows he's all that and 2 buckets of extra crispy chicken and he WAS the missing link to our superbowl run i'll be glad to come back and say "gosh, you were right..."

Williams missed the entire 2011 season with a knee injury. He played in 5 games during the 2012 season, then went on IR with a shoulder injury. His 2013 season, I have no idea what was up with that. Reports that he was scared to run the ball and couldn't crack the lineup tells you a lot about him.

Well yeah, it is a team sport. There are always other factors, but what was the biggest factor? It was, without a doubt, the running game. It benefited Romo and it benefited our defense.

And I'm still waiting for a decent argument why us "bonewads" should believe this group of nobodies and busts will get the job done.

Just look up front on our oline. That is the best argument. Look around the NFL. Look at the Pats, Colts, Ravens, Bronos. You don't need a high priced RB to have an effective running game. No doubt in my mind Dallas is a top 5 rushing team regardless. What did DM29 do that was special and can't be replaced as far as ball carrying? He wasn't the best back we had in space. He wasn't the fastest back we had. Not the most agile either. Rarely made anyone miss. He could be trusted to block blitzers, pick up short yardage, and catch the ball out of the backfield. Murray gave up 3 sacks on romo last year. McFadden gave up 0 last year and only 5 for his career. It is not so far fetched to believe our running game will be just fine even with the departure of DM29. Whoever the next back is will be a product of the oline.

If you haven't heard the news Chaz Green was terrible in practice - close to being labeled bust. Would have loved taken Ajayi in the 3rd and Green in the later rounds. Which mean we could have gotten everyone plus Ajayi - who is better than Randle and Dunbar.

But of course Cowboys can do no wrong in the draft and they always get it right. Just ask Jerry Jones and his 18 years of experience.

here's where it's fun when the "educated" crowd tries to paint me in the opposite corner. i already said IN THIS THREAD that in recent years they've done a much better job but in the past, hell yea they were boning it up left and right. so your fun all encompassing cliche is just as stupid as it can be.

and i never said we were getting 'em all right. i'm only saying it's just a TAD EARLY to slap tags on people. but have fun.

Ryan Williams

2010 - Hamstring issues
2011 - Knee injury, IR
2012 - Played in 5 games, shoulder injury, out for year
2013 - Another knee injury, out for the year (Didn't even know about this one until I did some more reading)

So, 3 injuries that put him on IR in 4 seasons in the NFL. He made it through preseason with us, great. I guess that's improvement enough for us to pencil him in as a starter?

And you think a LB in the 4th round is going to help our pass rush? You think he has more of a chance of making an impact than an RB in their first year? Okay then, we completely disagree on that.
