Did you listen to the interview? That is what he thinks. Otherwise why would he be so adamant that he wants to be released?
Because it is far easier to find a place right now as a potential starter or even 3rd WR. Quite a few teams haven't settled on a returner yet.
I don't think it's so he can sign for vet min with a bad team to be their 3rd WR and backup punt returner.
Which is precisely why he'd want his release sooner than later. It actually is more demonstrative of insecurity than confidence.
If he thought he was the greatest talent ever, he would not care if he was released now or later, he'd be confident that he would have a job in no time at all. Once camps are over and teams have gone through preseason, more of them will have their chances to evaluate their existing talent and chances are strong they will like players they are familiar with rather than signing some veteran with little time to indoctrinate him in to their team and culture.
What he doesn't realize is that there might not be anyone who wants him. Or, guess what, if they do they probably don't want him as more than a 4th or at best 3rd WR, just like here. Only he'd likely be making less money.
So why would he want to be released if nobody wanted him and he'd be making even less money? Fact of the matter is, he could probably start for a handful of teams and would be a the third receiver/returner for quite a few. If he were cut right now, he'd be in demand by teams like Carolina, St. Louis, Cleveland, Jacksonville and Buffalo to possibly start. He could be the third best WR on teams like Atlanta and a welcome addition.
After camp, those opportunities would be fewer in number and he knows it.
Which happens to be $2,000,000 this year, by the way. Yeah, maybe you are insurance. So what? You're getting two million bucks for it. That's more than you're worth.
So why not sit there and be happy to cash Jerry Jones' checks?
The bottom line is that he got butt-hurt because his name was shopped during the draft. Big deal. You think you're the only ballplayer a GM talked ever about trading? And did you consider that apparently no one wanted you when we asked?
The team's stance was that we were not going to "give him away". That does not suggest that nobody wanted him. Perhaps we were not willing to trade him bad enough for what his market might demand. Teams are not going to give up high choices for players of his age and assume his contract to boot. That does not mean they don't want him.
When (not if) we release him, he'll have a job in no time.
