Cris Collinsworth will replace John Madden in NBC's Sunday Night Football broadcast booth, according to NBC Sports chairman Dick Ebersol. "[Cris] will step into the role with Al [Michaels] immediately," Ebersol said on a conference call with reporters.

Collinsworth has served as co-host and analyst on the network's Football Night in America pregame show since it launched in 2006. He also serves as an analyst on Showtime's Inside The NFL and on NFL Network.

Ebersol says Football Night in America will be retooled with Collinsworth's departure.

Details about the move and Collinsworth's replacement will be announced in the coming weeks. Ebersol says he wants the focus for now to be on honoring Madden's career.

Definition of a downgrade?
I can tolerate Collinsworth okay, but Madden was great.

Collinsworth is ok but anyone the chose to replace John is going to be a disappointment.

If Dick Ebersol was even remotely serious about retooling Football Night In America, he would chunk Keith Olbermann's (sp?) weekly commentary piece out with the trash. Just my two cents.

you guys are probably right, there's noone out there to replace Madden's jolly appearance and voice, Collinsworth doesn't really have a voice for football broadcasting, also isn't exactly much of a leading personality, and Al Michaels pretty much just piggy-backed off of Madden

it'll be interesting to say the least

I never had a problem with Collinsworth, but as a replacement for Madden? Bad move!

I've always hated collinscrap i find him annoying and hate his voice so this news sucks!!!!!!!!

I don't mind collinsworth. There could be much worse people to take the job. I actually can only think of one or two that could do better. Problem is taking over for madden which would make it hard no matter who they chose to place in that spot.

Come on, really? That's not even clever lol.

:laugh2:

That pencil necked geek! AAAAAARRRRRGGGGGGHHHHHHH!!!!!! I thought I was rid of him for good and now they want to put him on MNF! That's appalling to me.

The guy is a clone of Joey Theesman without the screeching voice. :bang2:

He does not even approach the level of tool that is Theezman.

Well,

I know a lot of people are probably bummed about this. But I can't think of any announcer who comes close to Madden. Collinsworth is a great choice in my opinion.

I wonder if he's still going to hold onto his NFLN responsibilities.

He and Bob Papa weren't too bad, either.

He was pretty good with Al during the Pro Bowl this year.

Al Michaels has been doing MNF/SNF for 25 years, long before Madden joined MNF. For those that said Al 'piggybacked' on Madden, I think they're sorely mistaken.
