That all depends on how the scheme is run. We only have a few plays. Stretch, inside zones across the line, counters. If DMC is in there he sure as heck can pass protect so it doesn't tip run. Not really sure your concern is real.

My concern is are these guys capable of doing the job?. What was posted before it true what was a strength is now a major question mark. We don't know and that is a concern. My hope again is someone emerges and shows they can take on most of the load and be a guy we can count on.

That is not entirely true...it could have the reverse effect because each RB has a different skill set and also the play design is not going to be the same as it was with just Murray. With Murray everyone knew what was coming.

No they didn't know when Murray was in because he was in constantly. He was in on running, blocking and receiving. He did what an all around RB is capable of doing. Right now it is a guess what any of these guys can do. Being a Cowboy fan I hope someone does show they are up to the task

That is the point I was making...every team knew what Murray was about and how to defend him. Now, with 3 or 4 different backs, and a different game plan, they will not know what is coming.

If someone does the same thing over and over and over again, you can game plan for that. When you need to game plan for 3 or 4 different types of players, you might not know.

Please season hurry up and come so that everyone can relax about the running back situation. They don't have to be great, although I think Randle and McFadden are going to be pretty good, Because I think the defense is going to be better. I think their going to pass it a little more. And there's nothing wrong with that because I don't care what Jeremiah thinks, The Cowboys are pretty good with the ball in Romo's hands. The running game might not be spectacular but it will be good enough to put the Cowboys in the playoffs again

Can you even read??? I never said I had doubts about Randle being a contributor I said there were doubts about his future with the team due to a possible suspension to start the season. He had some off the field issues were you not aware of that? The only one who's ignoring things is you. Stop looking for arguments and read my posts.

And with all that uncertainty we do nothing more than pick a guy up off the garbage heap for tiny $. All this when we are also replacing Murray.

No talks with Mathews, Gore, Spiller or any of the others. Just a trash heap guy.

Yeah, that sounds like a team facing uncertainty ... In your mind

We didn't know Murray could do the job and he still didn't last the whole year for all the tremendous things he accomplished. All the guys we have have speed and quickness. We still have the best run blocking line in the NFL and it likely will be even better this year with even more talent and another year's experience under their belt.

I even think that with Loney as the new running game coordinator they have a good chance to get better in pass protection and play action fakes and misdirects. Callahan seemed to do the passing game no favors.

I'm not missing anything you are because you keep missing my point. I said Murray was excellent picking up those so called "dirty yards" Garrett refers to and in many of those situations he was gaining 4-7 yards. No back is going to consistently pick up 4-7 yards on every single carry but Murray kept the chains moving last season in tough yardage situations due to his power and cutback ability which is why he was leaned on for a franchise record 392 carries. Randle was kept fresh due to limited carries which enabled him to pop some runs. He's a quicker, shiftier and maybe even faster back than Murray but the Cowboys have gone through quicker, shiftier, faster backs the past several years because they weren't consistent picking up the tough chain moving yards. Murray has made some great plays where there was no play to be made. All Randle has shown is he can run through a big gapping hole but has yet to show he can turn a big loss into a sizable gain.

Actually Randle isn't faster or shiftier or any-thing-else-ier than Murray except maybe shadier based on his criminal charges. Randle rode the pine for a reason. Our best hope is one of the other backs to emerge. My best guess is our best hope is McFadden (if he is not DONE) he was a legitimate talent when he was drafted. Dunbar might be the X-factor here and surprise everyone and be used as the lead back. Size is important, but he is big enough.

Mathews, Gore and Spiller were all going to want more guaranteed money than McFadden and Mathews and Spiller have had their share of injury issues. I can assure you Jerry doesn't see McFadden as some scrub he was so in love with him coming out of Arkansas in 08 reports were he was trying to move up for McFadden in the draft. He's not banking much in McFadden but he's given him an opportunity to make almost $6M if he reaches all the incentives in his deal. McFadden is a low risk high reward player in Jerry's eyes. He honestly believes with the OL he's assembled that he doesn't need a great back and if McFadden can stay healthy he can produce to the level the Cowboys need to be a strong contender in 2015.

Jerry is banking more on the talent he has on the OL than he is on the talent he has at RB. A few weeks before the draft he said he wouldn't hesitate using another #1 on the OL saying that if he can keep strengthening the OL it will put less importance on having an elite back. Jerry isn't new to entering uncertainty there was a lot of uncertainty when he bought the team and hired Jimmy. He's a risk taker and he's gambling that his OL will make the backs he has productive.

You're delirious. Teams couldn't defend Murray all year and if it was that simple we wouldn't have gone 12 and 4 in the regular season. I can see it now, D coordinators game planning for Lance Dunbar. Pass the pipe......

Randle is shiftier and quicker and looked faster due to his fresh legs last season. Murray didn't have much speed left by week 10 which prompted many here to complain about his speed. On his 91 yard run his rookie year vs the Rams he looked like he was shot out of a gun because he had fresh legs. He looked slow as molasses later in that game and actually gave himself up on a long run because he ran out of gas. We'll just have to see if any of the backs emerge but Dunbar will never be used as the lead back he's not big enough.

Are you intent on pretending he didn't break his hand and have a significant decline in production after words? He wasn't dominant all year.

I am not a believer in Dunbar but that is because he is small and fragile. He still has very good quickness and can make people miss in space. I think you would be better served looking at the future as a range of possible outcomes instead of certainty of failure.

We're going to be worse at the RB position than we were last year. We were going to be worse no matter what we did short of moving up in the first round or trading for a back like Peterson. Since those things weren't going to happen, there's no point in worrying about it.

I do think we overused Murray a bit last year--because we could--and it caught up a tiny bit late in the season. I do think Murray was going to decline in terms of his production now matter what we did with him this season. And I do think Randle is on whatever upward swing his career is going to have. I also don't think it's going to matter all that much at the end of the day.

We've got the OL, and it's just the RB we're talking about here. We didn't win more games because we specifically had Demarco Murray running the ball more frequently last season. We stayed out of unfavorable passing situations and played better defense. It's not that hard a blueprint to copy. No matter who the RB is, teams aren't going to make a living stuffing the run against us with our other offensive weapons. We can beat teams too many different ways. That is, assuming, we eventually figure out how to really pressure the passer.

I responded to the comment "every team knew what Murray was about and how to defend him. Now, with 3 or 4 different backs, and a different game plan, they will not know what is coming......." No one referenced a decline in production due to injury or I would agree with you.

They wanted more guaranteed money? Well duh. McFadden got 200k. That's about as close to zero sd you'll find. That's not a player you sign if you are uncertain about Randle.

McFadden is a player you sign if you're banking on the talent you have on the OL which is clearly what the Cowboys are doing. They added a free agent rookie to their OL guaranteeing his entire contract. The Cowboys have invested three #1 picks on their OL and a lot of money that's what they're banking on.

Wait. Wasn't your argument that we signed him because we had no faith in Randle?

You can't comprehend at all can you? That wasn't my argument you're just looking to create them to keep this going day after day. McFadden was signed because the Cowboys lost Murray therefore all their backs moved up and Randle was facing off the field issues. He had been arrested twice for shoplifting and drug possession so his future with the team was in question as was his availability for the start of the season due to a possible suspension. Randle even had a felony domestic violence charge hanging over his head and that wasn't cleared up until late April. Do some reading!

If everyone moves up one and you have questions about Randle you do much more than grab a retread. Our approach makes it clear the staff liked what Randle brought. Signing a retread for almost no guaranteed money is far more consistent with my interpretation than yours.

That's called Occam's Razor *****.
