D.Smith Updates

You had to bring up the Steelers, didn't you? I only live in near Pttsburgh.

I'm about 4 hours north of P-burgh... so I get a little of that.

I haven't read all the replies, but my guess is they won't even go after him because they already have enough money/depth tied up in defensive backs. You can only have so many players and have only so much cap space. Signing another DB hurts cap space, team total depth, and throws away good money.

I really like Watkins but he is not ready to start and according to different people Coleman hasnt looked good so far, damn this signing would make this teams D a top 3 one (well potential one of course). talking to various texans fans they say that Coleman just was starting to look slower last year and that he wasnt a good tackler at all.

And you guys that don't want to get better because of a love affair with unproven guys on the roster make no sense at all.

FS has been a hole. A solid, young mid level free agent comes available that could fill the need for the foreseeable future and people are totally opposed to the idea.

Fans baffle me sometimes.

Apparently wanting an obvious upgrade at a position of tremendous need means you're giving up on a 5th round rookie you've never seen.

meh.....

then your in the same hole, but with more cap space

What happens if our sub-par safeties blow a game? What if that game is in the playoffs?

Are we going to console ourselves with all that glorious cap space all summer?

Thank you, no.

So your position is our front office can't see the obvious? Because apparently we've considered the idea and passed.

My God!

Someone that talks "sense".

We better close down the forum. Our quota of intelligent posters has been breached.

Because he agrees with you?

Right......

That's not what that comment suggested at all. Although, front offices have made a few mistakes in their time.

Really? Than in that case Smith isn't an "obvious upgrade". It's one or the other.

Those guys -- Jerry especially, and Parcells to a point -- have had some personnel blunders.

And yes, sometimes Jerry -- bless his heart -- can't see the obvious. I'm convinced of that.

Reading comprehension. Look at what I responded to, and then read the comment.

The comment expresses disbelief that wanting to upgrade a position is viewed by some as an attack on "their" players.

I have no doubt we've considered this, and have found it less than ideal.

But this organization signed Marcellus Wiley. Eddie George. I think they're more than a little open to questioning, when it comes to making the right FA decision.

A lot of us -- me included -- wanted Jerry to sign Darren Sharper last year. I think he would have made a huge difference.

Not saying Smith is as good, but if the money is available, why not try to upgrade your weak link on defense?

Ba-zactly, Chief.

We have one weak link. It's like a gift fell from heaven.

So that would make it a sin not to take advantage of it, right?;)

I guess I must be slow. Did you or did you not say signing Smith was an "obvious upgrade"? What am I missing?

The point of the statement. Which I just explained.

Some of us thought it was obvious that Pete Hunter and Rob Pettiti shouldn't be manning critical starting positions heading into the season, despite our front offices' belief otherwise. There has been times when wishfull thinking has trumped pragmaticism.

It's a tough call sometimes. Should JJ be relied upon to start this season? I don't know how we wouldn't but I can't say he can be either. Should Brady have gotten the same opportunity last year? To me, the jury was still out on him big time but we did it and it looks as if it's going to work out for us at this point.

Not an exact science, to be sure. I think that all you can do is try to make the best possible judgement based on what you know and go from there.

No, some people agree with the Cowboys management that Dwight Smith is not as you put it an "obvious upgrade" that's all.

Either that or guys that were being counted on to start got hurt and you had to go to plan B. And in the NFL sometimes plan B isn't very good.
