And let some team give up the picks to take him away?

Even if the CBA is extended and 2010 is a capped year, we all need to remember that there are two types of franchise designations - exclusive and non-exclusive. An exclusive franchise player must be offered a one-year contract for an amount no less than the average of the top five salaries at the player's position as of a date in April of the current year in which the tag will apply, or 120 percent of the player's previous year's salary, whichever is greater. Exclusive franchise players cannot negotiate with other teams. A non-exclusive franchise player must be offered a one-year contract for an amount no less than the average of the top five salaries at the player's position in the previous year, or 120 percent of the player's previous year's salary, whichever is greater. A non-exclusive franchise player may negotiate with other NFL teams, but if he signs an offer sheet from another team, the original team has a right to match the terms of that offer, or if it does not match the offer and thus loses the player, is entitled to receive two first-round draft picks as compensation. I feel certain that Ware would be designated as an exclusive franchise player, but even if he weren't, very few teams have two first round picks in any given draft.RoboQB;2662771 said:Yeah, there isn't a team in the league that wouldn't think twice about giving up 2 #1's for a player like DWare w/one year left on his rookie contract. At least, there shouldn't be.
On a sidenote; I wonder what Lawrence Taylor would've been worth in this era.

And can't they poison pill the "non-exclusive franchise tag" from what you're telling me?

No, the two first rounders must be from the same draft. However, you are correct when you mention the poison pill for "non-exclusive" franchise players, which have gained in popularity in recent years. That is why either the exclusive franchise tender or signing Ware to a new long-term deal are really the only sure-fire ways to keep him in Dallas.hardhittin31;2662786 said:That's why they can offer a first rounder from a current draft year and a first rounder for the following draft year, no ?

The second part of your post is interesting to me. Can anyone recall a player UNDER CONTRACT for Dallas during the Jerry Jones era who has held out for more money? I honestly cannot think of one at the moment......kowboyMarlon;2662842 said:Ware will get 8yrs 120 Million w/ 45 million guaranteed. Thats where the market is now. you are worth what someone is willing to pay. Washington would pay that just to not have to play against him.
I wouldn't be surprised if Ratliff holds out next wanting a new deal.

Emmitt wasn't under contract when he held out in 1993. He was a restricted free agent.kowboyMarlon;2662853 said:Yes Emmitt Smith in 1995 after the 0-2 Start
