Worked for a local safety supply company that had an intimate sales counter and had some interesting customers to say the least...tons of local contractors and big name Companies buying safety equipment

Cant say for certain it was Niland...but Im pretty sure my memory is correct in thinking it was him...

Anyway...few months on the job and Im learning starting to gain relationships with customers...anyway...my co-worker tips me off that "that customer is so an so from the 70's era Cowboys or something like that"...big dude. Anyway my co-worker already had a relationship with this guy. We were busy and my co-work told the Cowboy player to come sit with me and that I could help him....my co-worker introduced us from a far(not going to explain the layout of the lobby of our sales room)

Anyway...this dude is walking up to me from about 15 feet away, jolly...my co-worker greases the guy by telling me in front of him "Chris, thats so and so, and ex Cowboy who won a ring"

Dude had never met me before...walking up to me from about 10-15 feet coming to my desk....he takes off his SB ring as he is walking towards me and tosses it at me. He misses short and hit clanks all over my desk, I pick it up, its heavy, marvel at it...and then give it back to him. We have a good exchange and he buys things and i never see him again.

NO LIE. I almost guarantee it was Niland. There is a Niland story for you if you like the guy from your avatar text. I think i have told this to you a few years ago

The board doesn't like him being the highest paid, and now they want him to give money back? SMH.....not one poster on this board would go to the boss to take a reduction in salary....... to help "Becky" or "Lou", on their job. Not one.
You nailed it that no one is clamoring when a player outperforms his contract. Not one.
Wait … I have the answer

“If I made millions I would”.

Also, it’s the same fans who were all on board with Zack Martin holding out of an entire camp when he was under contract. “Just pay the man” was the common call around here. Long past his prime, two years and some injuries laying ahead of his retirement, but for … reasons … he got a pass.

A young player like CeeDee or Micah, coming off their *rookie* deal are called selfish. Zach Martin is given a high farewell tour extension contract he hasn’t come close to earning and it’s ok.

“Clueless” is kindness when it comes to describing them.

When was the last time you went into your employer's office and said, "You know what Boss, I didn't perform that great last month, I'd like to give you back some of my salary."?
Or, in the case of Micah …

“Boss, I know I had a first four years better than anyone who has ever been in my position here at Dipdoole Incorporated. And a career start better than anyone in the history of our industry except for one guy who is now considered one of the greatest of all time …

But, I know we need to hire an extra forklift driver, and I’m sure there are some payroll clerks who could use a few hours of extra overtime ahead of the holidays, and, yeah, there is maybe a junior salesmen we might be able to recruit from a competitor to handle some easy, basic, accounts …

So, rather than get with a headhunter and test the market, and get paid what I’m worth, I’m gonna take a pay cut because I love our customers that much.”

There is really nothing you can do with 60m AAV that you cannot do with 50m AAV. You are at best getting a league average starter, or at some positions a below average one, for that money. Also if you really needed it clearing 10m is trivial with how the cap works.

Umm, read the logo … this is not the “Logic Zone”. It’s the “Fan Zone”!

He needs decrease to 45-50 a year max. Is that possible for him to redo and take less? Management needs to demand he redo it. Otherwise we are screwed for 4 years.
When the Browns over paid Watson, every one in the league was saying that was the worse contract in the NFL. Jerry Jones said, "Hold my beer"
Next year Daks cap hit is close to 90 million. If the Cowboys restructure ( Kick the can down the road ) the contract the best they could do next year is 52.7 million against the cap.

He is one of my favorite all-time players. I still have the image in my mind of big old 76 pulling on run plays to clear the way for the run game. It’s criminal that he has not gotten the full recognition that he deserves.
Thanks for sharing the story.

I am certain it was him. We had photos of a lot of Cowboy teams on our sales room wall...he walked over and pointed to his picture on a team we had on the wall. I could point it out to this day...and Im not a football historian...i cant even remember game situations from last years Cowboy games...my memory is not very good but with faces and directions.

I could point the dude out in a 1970's era team photo right now.

Anyway...I know it was him...I just couldnt put money on it. The Niland sound rolling off my tongue just clicks in my head. It was him.

Small sample size...but a dude you would like to be around, if that makes sense.

The team photo that was pointed out to me had the guy in the upper to left/midleft in the team photo. So, there is your proof.

Name a player ever under contract that said let me take less because I'm making to much. I'll wait.

Teams have cut them when they wouldn't but Dak would be a 150 million cap hit. Ain't going to happen until the last year of his contract.

Sean Lee revised, not restructured, his contract after several injury plagued years. It was a payout if he didn't reach certain incentives. Cut his base in half from 7 to 3.5mil in 2019.

Tyron Smith did the same thing his last year here.

Joey Bosa this season took a 7mil paycut to help the team, with a max of 4mil back in incentives.

Rodgers did something too in 2023 but I'm not 100% on specifics

Note, I'm not agreeing with a fan pay cut mindset. Just recently some deals in Dallas that were revised as a payout unless the player hit incentives when their contract wasn't previously laid out that way to earn that money in the first place.

the cap is ripping off the players who bring in the money

im all for parity...just parity without owners, its so much better than dealing with the owners bs

Here’s big John today

And here’s how I will remember him until my dying day. In this one he’s pulling and leading the way for Calvin Hill.

They are already talking restructure dropping his cap hit from 89 mil to 52 mil in 2025.

That is just to make cap room. He's not giving anything back. It'll be kicking the can down the road again.
